For clinicians working with first-generation Asian American college students, this article considers 3 factors that affect how the MMM plays out in clinical care: clinicians' racial identity awareness, cross-racial dynamics, and the extent to which a patient has internalized racism or oppression. Case JJ is a student doing a rotation in a university clinic. JJ's patient introduces himself as "Todd" and is an 18-year-old Chinese American student who states that he hasn't been feeling well. As JJ talks with Todd, JJ learns that Todd studies electrical engineering and that his parents, brother, and sister run a restaurant in a neighboring state. JJ notices Todd's flat affect and difficulty maintaining eye contact 1 and asks Todd about his courses, part of a curriculum widely known for its rigor and intensity. As JJ leafs through Todd's health record, a clinic note from 3 months ago suggests Todd experienced suicidal ideation. 2,3 JJ continues to try to engage Todd, who says, "Classes are fine. My engineering project group goes out for drinks without me, though, typically leaving me with group problem sets to do alone. I hate that." JJ responds, "I see why you hate it: that's a lot of pressure." Todd denies that this is the case. "Sorry," he says, "I shouldn't have brought it up. It doesn't matter. I just have to get this degree so I can help my family and make my parents happy we came to this country." JJ wonders what to say next. Commentary Research on Asian American students overwhelmingly focuses on the existence and impact of the "model minority" myth (MMM), especially on academic performance. The myth suggests that Asian Americans work hard and are successful despite racial

To avoid the fluctuations that appear in the numerical solutions with the LBM the regularization method that based on the median filtration is proposed. The regularization method was tested on the classical problem of the flow over the circular cylinder. The fluid flow modeling over the Nasa 0012 profile at different angles of attack is carried out at the Reynolds number 1000. The flow patterns, the drag and lift coefficients of the NASA profile studied in detail.

When your graduation gift is cancer: The making of a psychotherapist

These experiences profoundly transformed my personal and professional trajectories. I will describe the details of my experience and then share the lessons and transformations that I continue to reap since being diagnosed. It is my hope that clinicians,
supervisors, and professors might glean insights from my experience of serious illness as a graduate student and early career psychologist as to how they might support their colleagues, students, and patients when they face significant health issues.

Although many gaydar studies report that people can accurately and quickly guess a person’s sexual orientation without direct knowledge, there are others that suggest gaydar can be inaccurate and stereotype-based. Most recently, research on the use of gaydar in artificial intelligence sparked a public outcry about the application and production of gaydar research suggesting that the study of gaydar is a high-stakes public issue in today’s world. The purpose of this article is to highlight this debate, identify the major areas of disagreement and consider a wider range of questions than previously addressed in the literature. This article critically examines conceptual, statistical and analytical problems in the research literature on gaydar and is organised around three central themes: (1) differences in how gaydar is conceptualised and operationalised, (2) data analyses that tend to emphasise accuracy over error and (3) studies that validate long-held stereotypes about LGBTQ+ and gender nonconforming people. This article provides a nuanced discussion about the existence and meaning of gaydar in the context of this ongoing debate.

Co... more White, liberal, educated, upwardly mobile people are often thought to have transcended racism. Consequently, they may not think of themselves as white, as possessing any particular white privilege, or as having any sense of su- periority about their whiteness. To confront someone about one's repudiated white privilege is analogous to confronting the person about their defensive grandiosity; the person feels attacked and responds with denial and counterattack. We suggest that white racial superiority, white privilege, and repudiated white racial identity are forms of pathological narcissism driven by an unconscious desire to be a triumphant oedipal winner and to avoid, at any price, being a disgraced oedi- pal loser. White racial superiority, white privilege, and white identity rely on racialized oedipal splitting in which whiteness comes to represent all idealized forms of love and lust while blackness comes to represent the devalued forms.
