Today, Europe demonstrated that defence innovation can move at operational speed. The EU defence innovation ecosystem is dynamic and responsive. The challenge is turning it into rigorously tested operational capability at the speed of relevance. The Sentinel Strike Challenge was created earlier this year precisely for this purpose: an innovative two-stage European Defence Agency's prize contest designed to move complete loitering-munition systems from evidence-based technical assessment into operational experimentation under realistic and contested conditions, providing Member States with trusted evidence before major investment decisions. Stage 1 has now been delivered at exceptional speed. The contest opened on 5 May. Industry had just 30 days to prepare and submit complex applications supported by evidence. Following a demanding technical and comparative evaluation, the results were announced to the winners only 42 days after the submission deadline, 72 days from launch to selection. More than 140 expressions of interest, together with industry’s ability to respond to such a demanding procedure within a compressed timeframe, demonstrated the depth, responsiveness and readiness of Europe’s defence industrial base. Speed did not come at the expense of rigor. Applications were comprehensively assessed against maturity, system integration, safety, operational relevance, resilience, human-control safeguards, deployment readiness and the capacity to generate traceable evidence. This was made possible through close cooperation between EDA, the Exército Português and national authorities, and technical and operational experts from across the Member States. Congratulations to the ten Stage 1 prize winners, and particularly to the five highest-ranked finalists progressing to Stage 2: Helsing, Destinus, C-Astral Aerospace, UAVision and SAS Tech. Within 140 days of launching the contest, EDA will have moved from an open European competition to field testing in Portugal, as part of EU OPEX26-1/ARTEX26. This is a significant achievement at EU level. It demonstrates that Europe can act at operational speed when industrial responsiveness, procedural innovation, Host Nation capability and rigorous multinational evaluation are brought together around a clear operational need. The strategic value extends well beyond the competition: trusted, harmonised, comparable and operationally validated evidence to support sovereign Member State decisions, sharpen requirements, reduce duplicated testing and create stronger foundations for European cooperation. Behind this achievement were many long days, more than a few sleepless nights and an exceptional collective effort by the entire team. This result is a powerful demonstration of EDA’s ability to combine institutional agility, procedural innovation and uncompromising rigor in support of Europe’s defence capability needs.

🏆 EDA names five finalists for loitering munition challenge The European Defence Agency has completed the first stage of its Sentinel Strike Challenge, a two-stage competition designed to evaluate and field-test Europe's most promising loitering munition technologies. Following a competitive assessment of more than 140 expressions of interest, five companies have been selected to advance to operational experimentation: Helsing (Germany), Destinus (Netherlands), C-Astral Aerospace (Slovenia), UAVision (Portugal) and SAS Tech (Greece). The remaining companies in the top ten are Renegade UxS (Denmark), Robotto.ai (Denmark), Cerberon Defence Systems (Germany), Thales LAS (France) and ALTUS LSA S.A. (Greece). This autumn, the five finalists will test their systems at the Santa Margarida military training area in Portugal during EU OPEX26. Military users from EU Member States will assess the technologies under realistic and operationally relevant conditions, comparing their performance across the same scenarios. The overall winners of the Sentinel Strike Challenge will share up to EUR 1.8 million in Stage 2 prizes. ➡️ Read more: https://lnkd.in/etwVyZdW #EUdefence #StrongerTogether #SentinelStrike #LoiteringMunitions

  • LIVE DEMO 26, held on May 12th at the Ghencea training field and organized by the Romanian Land Forces together with TNT Production Romania, brought together international companies showcasing advanced defense technologies in realistic tactical scenarios. C-Astral Aerospace proudly demonstrated its SQA/Belin-V system — the fixed-wing ISR platform operating throughout the harsh windy conditions during the exercise day. Despite the challenging environment, the system delivered outstanding performance, confirming its reliability and operational excellence in real-world ISR missions. The event concluded with an exhibition of participating companies and defense technologies, providing an opportunity for attendees to engage directly with industry representatives and explore the showcased systems. 📸 Photos: Christian Dobre #LIVEDEMO26 #CAstralAerospace #ISR #DefenseTechnology #UAV #RomanianLandForces #MilitaryInnovation #Aerospace #SituationalAwareness #FixedWingUAV
