Due to political, socio-economic, cultural, and geographical reasons more than 60 million people living in this region have faced lack of opportunities to higher education in engineering and professional development. In this paper a feasibility study is conducted for possible establishment of a postgraduate level inter-disciplinary engineering program in Southern Punjab region to fill this gap. A successful inter-disciplinary engineering management program at University of Ottawa is adopted as a model. The institutions of higher learning in Southern Punjab are evaluated for their preparedness to institute such a program on a matrix of indicators. The institutions of higher learning in Southern Punjab are evaluated for their preparedness to introduce such a program on a matrix of indicators. The study determines that establishment of such program will allow engineers, architects and town planners from multiple disciplines to acquire higher education and develop managerial and entrepreneurial skills in close proximity to their homes. The study concludes that such a program is feasible, highly desired and can be launched with minimum additional financial and human resources.

Underdeveloped parts of the World are coping with challenges like poverty, lack of technology & expertise, natural & man-made disasters as well as conundrums of untapped explosive mines. In addition, people living in such areas are mainly associated with labour intensive professions working in small industries and agriculture lacking health & safety measures. Individuals exposed to such environment are often prone to accidents due to safety lapses & fatal diseases and need low-cost prosthetic devices due to amputation in order to rehabilitate, get back to work and live a better quality of life. The consideration of supply chain models, technology used in additive manufacturing, materials properties, cost & customer satisfaction is essential for optimizing the use of 3D printing & additive manufacturing in prosthesis in such parts of the World. The usage of novel techniques such as 3D Printing and conventional methods like Injection Molding and feasibility of providing optimum solution in terms of hybrid models while considering the advantages of availability, affordability and mass production of conventional techniques, and prototype development, simulation, customization and design freedom using 3D printing & additive manufacturing is qualitatively & quantitatively analyzed in this paper.

The design provides robust and automated environment for centralized control of a geographically scattered process. Microcontroller based data acquisition (DAQ) control units for distributed data processing are designed and serially connected with COM port of the remote terminal units (RTUs) via RS485/232 convertor. The real-time information gathered in RTU from sensors is fed to the master terminal unit (MTU) through a dedicated communication link. Visual Basic (VB) is used to develop Human-Machine Interface (HMI) environment for technicians and operators. The in-house HMI development aimed at reliable, cost effective, user friendly and easy to troubleshoot and update software. PC-based SCADA training system and HMI were developed to meet the training needs of Sui Northern Gas Pipelines Ltd. (SNGPL). The design work supports future updates and provides opportunities of research in rapidly evolving field of industrial automation and control.

KSEW operation had historically suffered from work delay, cost overruns, material wastage, low manpower utilization, and low worker morale. Implementation of lean tools (5S, SMART QMS Objectives, RCA. 5 Whys, Kaizen, JIT and Poka Yoke with CAPA) at KSEW minimized work order delays, eliminated breakdowns, increased workspace, reduced sorting time, rework & material waste. Productive utilization of manpower & machinery resulted in improved quality, customer satisfaction, and overall performance, production and profit. Promising results at KSEW present a case study & benchmark model on implementing Lean System in the port & shipping industry.

The increasing penetration of renewable energy and the growing demand for cross-border electricit... more The increasing penetration of renewable energy and the growing demand for cross-border electricity transfer through interconnection pose significant challenges to voltage stability in modern smart grids operation. Among the various Flexible AC Transmission Systems (FACTS) devices in power system management, the Static Synchronous Compensator (STATCOM) has emerged as an effective solution for dynamic voltage regulation and reactive power control. This paper presents a review of STATCOM applications in smart grids operation, focusing on its role in maintaining voltage stability and enhancing power flow. To complement the review, a case study is developed on a 500 kV, 150 km British Columbia (Canada) and Washington (USA) grid interconnection line. A MATLAB/Simulink model is implemented to evaluate system behavior under normal operation and fault conditions, both with and without STATCOM. Simulation results demonstrate that STATCOM significantly improves voltage recovery, reduces oscillations, provides rapid reactive power support, and stabilizes the DC link voltage. These findings confirm the practical importance of STATCOM in smart grid operations, particularly in long-distance and high voltage interconnections. Future directions are also highlighted, including advanced control strategies and renewable energy integration in Energy Management Systems of Smart Cities.
