The objective of this study is to compare the validity of three different methods for calculating the prevalence of smokers. First-year students at a Health Sciences School. Smoking was evaluated by means of a self-administered questionnaire, the carbon monoxide (CO) in expiratory air and saliva cotinine. The prevalence found using each method, the agreement with the Kappa index and the internal validity of the questionnaire and the cooximetry were evaluated using the cotinine test as the gold standard. A total of 29.3% of the 181 students studied were classified as smokers by some measurement; 26.5% (cotinine), 22.1% (self-stated) and 9.4% (cooximetry). Two thirds of the smokers had low nicotine dependence. Good agreement was found only between the questionnaire and the cot...
Position, damping and inertia control of parallel-plate electrostatic actuators

A method for controlling position, damping and inertia in parallel-plate electrostatic actuators ... more A method for controlling position, damping and inertia in parallel-plate electrostatic actuators is proposed. This method overcomes the pull-in effect and the limitations produced by the parasitic capacitances without requiring any additional electrodes or position sensors. It forces the actuator to behave like a linear second-order system with full control of the dynamics, being able to electronically adapt the mass and damping coefficients for a better performance for each particular application. A continuous-time, analog linearization law, feasible to be implemented with typical blocks of analog or digital signal processing, is described and analyzed in this paper.

The FPAA configurable analog blocks (CABs) are based on a reconfigurable translinear cell (RTC), capable of implementing the basic circuit elements required by translinear and log-domain circuit design. The interfacing is provided by an I/O programmable cell, which allows for easier connectivity between the signal-processing core and the external circuitry. As a proof-of-concept, a 5 5 RTC FPAA testchip was implemented in 0.35-m CMOS technology. A set of various circuit primitives, such as one-and four-quadrant multipliers, an Euclidean distance operator and a fourth-order log-domain filter, were mapped on the chip in order to demonstrate the versatility of the approach. FPAA bandwidth reaches 20 MHz with a power consumption of 30 W/TE and precision errors below 3%.

The Ansatz agrees with known formulas for integer dimensions 1, 2 and 3, both for hard wall and periodic boundary conditions. The method is based solely on the knowledge of energy spectrum and standard assumptions. We also study numerically the conductance fluctuations in 4D Anderson model, depending on system size L and disorder W. We find a small plateau with a value diverging logarithmically with increasing L. Universality gets lost just in 4D.
