Als resultaat van het Congres Veertig Jaar Studie Nederlands in Indonesie (april 2010) wordt de b... more Als resultaat van het Congres Veertig Jaar Studie Nederlands in Indonesie (april 2010) wordt de bundel Veertig Jaar Studie Nederlands in Indonesie gepubliceerd. De afdeling Multiculturele Samenleving is vertegenwoordigd met negen bijdragen. De afdeling Ontwikkelingen in het NVT-Onderwijs telt tien artikelen. De derde afdeling Indische Cultuur bestaat eveneens uit tien bijdragen. In een vierde afdeling is ten slotte een tweetal artikelen op het gebied van de Koloniale Geschiedenis opgenomen. De artikelen zijn zowel in het Nederlands als in het Indonesisch opgenomen. Alleen de eerste bijdrage verschijnt in het Engels. In een noot wordt steeds aangegeven wie de vertaling van een artikel heeft vervaardigd. Als deze aanduiding ontbreekt heeft de auteur hied zelf voor zorggedragen.

As a process that relates to culture, acculturation becomes one important factor in tourism. Usua... more As a process that relates to culture, acculturation becomes one important factor in tourism. Usually, the hosts borrow the result of acculturation in tourism activity more than the tourists (guests). Acculturation in tourism does not only occur in tourism practices today but also in the past, especially in colonial Indonesia. This article discusses acculturation in tourism activity in the Netherlands-Indies that became part of the tourism practices by using historical methods and Nunez’s concept of acculturation in tourism. By using guidebooks, newspapers, magazines, postcards, photographs, travelogues as sources, this article traces the result of acculturation at that time.The result shows that there was acculturation in tourism activity in the Netherlands-Indies. There were material objects and customs as tourism facilities, that could be seen, practised and enjoyed by the tourists. In doing research of Indonesian historiography in the colonial period, primary sources in the for... more In doing research of Indonesian historiography in the colonial period, primary sources in the form of colonial archives are important. That includes historiography of tourism in Indonesia. This article describes archival collection of the National Archives of Indonesia related to tourism in the colonial period of Indonesia and attempts to determine the related keywords. The results are information about the tourism activities was the history of the institution, namely Vereeniging Toeristenverkeer and the keywords that used, were 'Vereeniging toeristenverkeer' and 'toerisme'. The archival sources are mainly from the collection of Algemene Secretarie. There are many other collections, it is possible, considering that tourism activities are not only the concern of single institution. Tourism activities are also includes tourist attractions, infrastructure, transportation, accommodation and security.

Despite some vital and interwoven cultural elements of the colonial Dutch East-Indies, the existe... more Despite some vital and interwoven cultural elements of the colonial Dutch East-Indies, the existence of Islam has never been brought up as part of the local culture. Since Islam in the colony was perceived with prejudice, the colonial government considered that it was not important to mark the contribution of Islam in the culture of the Indies. The paper reveals that there has been little information published by the colonial travel bureau on the Islamic spiritual aspects, despite the fact that there were some records written by foreign tourists who were interested in the practice of Islam. The tourist bureau favored Islamic architecture and featured the Hindu influence on Islam.

This paper discusses the views regarding tourism, especially the role of Vereeniging Toeristenver... more This paper discusses the views regarding tourism, especially the role of Vereeniging Toeristenverkeer (VTV)-Association of tourism- in the Netherlands Indies from the newspapers published in the Netherlands. The newspapers are Het Vaderland (HV), Nieuwe Rotterdamsche Courant (NRC), Algemeen Handelsblad (AH) during the period of 1909 to 1940. From the three newspapers, the articles about promotion of tourism in the Netherlands Indies, are found to be dominant. They provide also an overview of criticism and suggestion about tourism in the Netherlands Indies, which can be understood because the three newspapers were the liberal newspapers. This article discusses the use of various elements both of the Dutch and the Dutch East Indies’ identity in the promotion of tourism in the Dutch East Indies. What did the Dutch identity look like and which elements were used in tourism’s promotion of the Dutch East Indies? Using the concept of cultural identity from Stuart Hall 1994 and Ludo Beheydt 2002, we trace the characteristics both of the Dutch and the Dutch East Indies’ identity in the various elements of the promotion of Dutch East Indies’ tourism.

In 2007 Bandung was designated as a pilot project for the creative cities of Asia Pacific, and in... more In 2007 Bandung was designated as a pilot project for the creative cities of Asia Pacific, and in 2015 Bandung was included in the UNESCO Creative Cities Network. It is related to the development of the city of Bandung and the creativity of the population. Its creativity is formed through a process. This article traces the roots of this creativity since the beginning of its formation in the early 19th century to become the city of Bandung in the early 20th century. The method used is the historical method supported by creative cities’ and voluntary organization’s concepts. Primary sources were official government archives, tourist guidebooks, magazines, and newspapers. The result shows that the roots of the creativity of the Bandung population have been formed since the colonial period, both individually and in groups. Artikel ini berkaitan dengan diaspora Cham di Malaysia, yang mempertahankan hubungan transnasiona... more Artikel ini berkaitan dengan diaspora Cham di Malaysia, yang mempertahankan hubungan transnasional dengan tanah asal mereka "Kampong Cham" di Kamboja. Dengan proses perpindahan dan pemukiman kembali, komunitas ini menghadapi tantangan nyata dan harus mengembangkan cara hidup baru di lingkungan baru. Dari bentuk tradisional pertanian dan perikanan, yang merupakan sumber utama dukungan ekonomi mereka di Kamboja, orang-orang ini mengubah kegiatan tradisional utama mereka untuk mengembangkan kegiatan ekonomi berorientasi komersial di pemukiman baru mereka. Makalah ini bertujuan untuk menjawab dua pertanyaan, pertama, bagaimana migran menggunakan hubungan klien patron untuk bertahan dan mengejar kehidupan mereka di Malaysia. Kedua, bagaimana Cham diaspora di Malaysia yang mengambil peran pengusaha etnik atau pelindung membantu migran lainnya untuk menegosiasikan ruang transnasional dan karena itu memfasilitasi transnasionalisme. Jaringan etnik ini memegang peranan penting dalam bisnis etnik dan strategi bertahan hidup ekonomi mereka, baik bagi pendatang migran migran sebelumnya maupun pendatang baru. Makalah ini berkontribusi pada isu kontemporer Cham diaspora di Malaysia, salah satu etnis minoritas di Kamboja dan strategi mereka untuk menghadapi globalisasi dengan membangun jaringan transnasional.

At the end of the nineteenth century until the beginning of the twentieth century, International ... more At the end of the nineteenth century until the beginning of the twentieth century, International tourists have begun visiting the Dutch East Indies and Malaya. Therefore, guidebooks about the Dutch East Indies and Malaya were published for travellers and tourists. Using the historical method, this article discusses which information, how and why the information presented in the early tourist guidebooks. The result shows that the guidebooks provide various information not only about the objects that can be visited, but also about natural scenery, peoples, culinary, flora, fauna, and customs in the regions. They presented in a long narrative and practical text with illustrations. The illustrations in the Indies’ tourist guidebooks are more varied and accentuate nature and culture compared to Malaya’s guidebooks. Both of them presented exotics objects with the aim to attract western tourists in particular.
