Written in 1979, Impromptu, as the title suggests, came about in a burst of creativity following a long period of silence and mental illness. Impromptu is a long poem of more than 350 lines divided into 13 sections. Edited by Gian Maria Annovi, translations by Gian Maria Annovi, Diana Thow, and Jean-Charles Vegliante.

Against historically determined conventions that helped launch her career as a translator of Fren... more Against historically determined conventions that helped launch her career as a translator of French literature in the mid-twentieth century, this article reconsiders Louise Varèse's translation of Arthur Rimbaud's Illuminations, published with New Directions in 1946, as activating a range of cultural, historical, and critical interpretations that are not always anticipated by her source text. I read Varèse's claims about rendering the "prismatic and protean quality" of Illuminations in her Translator's Note, alongside Marjorie Perloff's theory of Rimbaud's "poetics of indeterminacy," and translation Studies scholar Matthew Reynolds's prismatic model of translation, to reframe Varèse's much-lauded "accuracy" as an approach that instead highlights the interdependent relationship between Rimbaud's French poetic text and its English translation, while also foregrounding Varèse's historical and cultural intervention. Through a close textual analysis of "Side-Show," Varèse's English translation of Rimbaud's poem "Parade," and Varèse's revision of the poem from 1957, I demonstrate the ways Varèse's translation "activates" Rimbaud's language for her English readers while thematizing the secondary nature of her translation.

This paper considers how an increased awareness of translation in the language classroom might im... more This paper considers how an increased awareness of translation in the language classroom might impact the instruction of Comparative Literature, and literary studies more broadly. Despite the arguments for translation's centrality to the study Comparative Literature (Apter, 2006; Bassnett, 2006; Newman, 2017) translation pedagogy is still under-studied and under-practiced in the Comparative Literature classroom. Among Comparative Literature instructors, close reading is often given pride of place, an emphasis echoed in commonly-assigned textbooks such as Writing Analytically (Rosenwasser & Stephen, 2019). Yet the practice of close reading is arguably one of the most challenging concepts for beginning literature students to master, in part due to the resistance of some instructors and other literary professionals in modeling how to close read a translated text (Venuti, 2004, 2017). By outlining specific lessons, this article shows how employing a hermeneutic translation model (Steiner, 1975; Venuti, 2017, 2019; Laviosa, 2020) in the literature classroom can help literature students conceptualize this central building block of literary studies. The article closes with a discussion of some of the ways in which a greater awareness of Translation Studies in the Comparative Literature classroom could unite theory with practice.

Il libro è una ricerca sull'ambiguità della ' parola ' (dall'albanese si traduce in festa di nozze) rimescolata nel bilinguismo dell'autrice, ma anche dall'insistente ritmicità sonora che rende la dinamica linguistica sfuggente, effimera. Come il battito delle ciglia. La prima parte raccoglie prose poetiche: il secondo è composto di poesie in lingua con traduzione a fronte a cura di Dafina Prifti con la supervisione dell'autrice. L'ultimo capitolo raccoglie poesie sparse. Le illustrazioni di Massimiliano Amati (in arte Re delle Aringhe) introducono il fluire dei testi. La prefazione è di Maria Grazia Calandrone. Il CD allegato Il cd allegato al libro raccoglie le sperimentazioni sonoro-poetiche che l'autrice ha realizzato con i suoi due progetti di poesia sonora: Acchiappashpirt e J A. In Acchiappashpirt (Jonida Prifti e il musicista Stefano di Trapani) il tema è la comunicazione verbale come tramite per il paranormale in una lotta senza esito, per la supremazia tra strumento musicale e voce, in cui l'uno modifica, altera e comanda l'altro, per far emergere l'impossibilità della definizione fissa. In J A (Jonida Prifti e la musicista Andrea Noce) il testo viene trascinato in un processo di maturazione vitale attraverso una placenta sonora ritmica. Ajenk-videopoema "Ajenk" è anche il titolo del videopoema realizzato dall'autrice dopo la pubblicazione del libro, e postprodotto da Andrea Noce. Il video narra di un flusso di coscienza che si sfrange in ricordi fluttuanti. Nella tradizione albanese si dice "ajenk" il festino che precede per 4 giorni interi, da giovedì a domenica, lo sposalizio. È il momento in cui le generazioni s'incontrano e confondono, in un tempo sospeso. Attraverso un fluido rimontaggio di videoappunti personali (girati dall'autrice, Jonida Prifti, nel tempo di un ritorno al paese natìo) che fanno da traccia a una colonna vocale in versi pronunciati in un dialetto regionale albanese, il tempo della festa vive una metamorfosi nei personaggi che sfumano nel tempo filmico. This special issue brings together a set of papers which look to the future of translation in hig... more This special issue brings together a set of papers which look to the future of translation in higher education. It is a direct response to the flurry of publications which over the last two decades have highlighted and explored the value of translation as a pedagogical tool in modern language learning. In a now oft-cited early example, Cook (2007, p. 396) decried the marginality of translation in “mainstream applied linguistic and English language teaching theory” and called for a return to translation both in the language classroom and as a “major topic for applied linguistic research”. This call echoes through subsequent publications and now, at the start of the third decade of the millennium, there certainly is an ample body of scholarship, theory, and methodology that centers on translation in the language classroom. The changes are so dramatic and the signs so positive that some have gone so far as to speak of a “translation turn” in language teaching (Carreres, Mu oz-Calvo, and Noriega-S nchez, 2017b, p. 99, our translation). On the ground, however, things are not always so rosy and we are still very far today from a situation in which translation is systematically used in language instruction, especially in the Anglophone countries where translation was long overlooked. Rather than adding to the now numerous calls for the use of translation in the language classroom, the papers in this special issue seek to move the debate forward by exploring what we refer to as the implementation problem and the question of impact. The papers exploring the implementation problem address the gap that can exist between scholarly literature where translation is now valorized and classroom practice where it can often remain marginal. The papers exploring the question of impact, on the other hand, draw attention to the wider effects that the (re-)introduction of translation into the language classroom will have in order to reimagine translation right across higher education.
