AI content is often not designed to deceive anyone these days – it’s designed to satisfy the recommender algorithms that decide what we see. Philip Di Salvo argues that ‘AI slop’ is reshaping the information ecosystem itself, with the sharpest consequences falling on those least able to be heard 👇
A few weeks ago I was invited to take part in a discussion convened by the CDAC Network's Community of Practice on information integrity. The discussion examined what happens when the very systems people depend upon, to search for information, to communicate, to make sense of what they encounter, begin to shift in fundamental ways. It was great to join a thoughtful group of speakers drawn from civil society, academia, and journalism, each bringing a distinct perspective on epistemic trust, information disorder, and the pressure that generative AI is placing on the wider information ecosystem. The CDAC Network kindly agreed to host a blogpost developed from the notes I had prepared for the talk. In this piece I set out my thinking on "AI slop" and "slopaganda", approaching both as by-products of a digital ecosystem that has, for too long, been optimised for engagement and metrics rather than for democratic values. I suggest that AI slop, understood here as a form of content spamming, generates an infrastructural problem that extends well beyond the more familiar harms of mis- and disinformation. It erodes trust in a broader sense and makes the task of navigating reality more uncertain and more laborious. By excelling at production, distribution, and confusion at scale, AI slop increasingly takes the form of content created by machines to satisfy the needs of other machines: the algorithms that, as Jason Koebler has memorably put it, "control reality." These dynamics carry particularly serious implications in contexts already marked by informational confusion and strain, such as armed conflict, political tension, and the many other conditions of instability with which our present reality is all too familiar. You can read the full piece on the CDAC Network website: https://lnkd.in/eH2mwiEX Thank you.
