These cadets are preparing for careers on commercial vessels worldwide, taking on vital roles in navigation, cargo safety and maritime operations. Reaching seafarers at this stage of their career is one of the most effective ways to drive systemic change in marine protection. Unplugged, offline, and clearing 6.5kg of rubbish. 📵🌊 A little over a week ago on Friday, 10th July, we had the pleasure of hosting the team from The Wixroyd Group for a brilliant afternoon on the coast. For this team, the day was about much more than just a beach clean, it was a chance to escape the humdrum of the daily grind. 6 members of their staff took a dedicated 2-hour break to step outside, immerse themselves in nature, and completely disconnect from their work schedule. Instead of talking about work, they spent the afternoon connecting, appreciating the beauty of our local coastline, and actively protecting it. 🌿💚 The Impact: 🗑️ 6.5kg of rubbish successfully intercepted and removed from the beach. 📵 2 hours of total digital detox for the team 🤝 Stronger team bonds built outside the office walls. What We Found in Just 1 Hour 🚶 Yesterday morning, we teamed up with the fantastic team at Shaping Portsmouth , for a collaborative Mental Health "Walk & Talk" litter pick around Southsea Canoe Lake. In just one hour, 15 local professionals stepped away from their businesses for a short while to prioritize their wellness and protect our shared local environment. Total Waste Removed: 4kg of litter prevented from entering the Solent. Alongside the usual plastic packaging, the team uncovered some incredibly unique (and slightly bizarre) items: 🧩 Stray pieces of Lego 💇♀️ ...Someone's lost ponytail (extensions, we hope!) 🚬 Thousands of cigarette butts. Did you know that cigarette filters are actually made of plastic? They don't simply biodegrade; instead, they break down into toxic microplastics and leach harmful chemicals into our soil and waterways. Clearing these off the pavement is a massive win for our local marine life. Monitoring Marine Biodiversity and Ecological Success 🦪📊 What does a day in the life of a marine conservationist look like? For our restoration team, it means heading out onto the pontoons to conduct vital seasonal surveys on our deployed native oyster populations. Our Restoration Lead, Hannah, alongside our brilliant interns, Victoria and William, have been busy collecting field data to evaluate the structural success of our oyster baskets. Key metrics being tracked include: 🦪 Growth & Mortality Rates: Taking precise physical measurements of individual oysters to assess long-term health and survival trends. 🦪 Biodiversity Colonization: Documenting and tracking the marine species actively utilizing the oyster reefs as new habitats and nurseries. 🦪 Ecosystem Services: Evaluating how effectively these oysters are contributing to localized water filtration and ecological restoration. All data collected from these surveys will undergo analysis to determine the measurable impact these oysters are having on our local marine environment. This work is highly collaborative. 4 years of corporate impact on the South Coast 🌊💼✨ Last Friday, we had the absolute pleasure of hosting our long-standing corporate partners, Astute People, for their annual beach clean at Eastney Beach. Astute Business has partnered with the Final Straw Foundation for four consecutive years. This longevity is a testament to their deep commitment to corporate social responsibility (CSR) and their proactive approach to employee well-being. Getting teams away from their desks and into nature is a powerful tool for mental clarity, team bonding, and environmental stewardship. Unfortunately, this year highlighted just how critical these cleanups remain. In just 1.5 hours, the Astute team cleared an alarming 20.2kg of waste from the shoreline. Amongst the usual single-use plastic bottles, aluminium cans, and discarded disposable BBQs, the team also safely removed larger hazardous items like footwear and nappies before they could wash into the Solent.
