Finisterre designs functional product for those that share a love of the sea.

About us

For those who share our love of the sea. Proudly #BCorp It started in 2003 in a flat above a surf shop with an innovative fleece that was designed to keep out chill winds and warm up cold bodies. Since these early days, driven by those who have jumped on board, supported by our customers and suppliers, the brand and product has widened beyond these original beginnings. Yet from our cliff top workshop in St. Agnes, we stay true to our original design ethos of functionality and sustainability brought to life in an understated style and identity, always remaining committed to product, environment and people. The name of one of the most rugged headlands that bravely bears the full brunt of the North Atlantic gales, and a former shipping forecast area, Finisterre literally means end of the earth or land’s end. The place where land ends has intrigued man for centuries, fostering both a real and a romantic relationship with the sea; a relationship that runs deep in our narrative. Since day one we have taken a pioneering approach to making better and more sustainable product, challenging and innovating, seeking alternatives to what has gone before. We’re committed to making informed decisions about our impact on the environment and are constantly trying to push boundaries to make the best product we can. In our eyes this is gear that will be with you the longest; and the longer you have it, the more attached to it you become. This definitely felt like a proud dad hug. It was a huge honour to receive an honorary doctorate from the University of Exeter, recognising nearly 25 years of building Finisterre. I was also asked to close the graduation ceremony with a few words. TBH I can’t remember who spoke at my grad ceremony (possibly hungover), so I tried to keep it short and memorable… Find what you love, and protect it with everything you have. Be brave. Starting something is often the hardest part. Messy is okay and perhaps even necessary. Stay grounded. We’re all a result of those who have believed in us. I may have been receiving the degree, but there are a lot of people who have believed in me along the way: my family, friends and the entire Finisterre crew. Thank you. And finally, my advice to young me sat where you are today…’you got this’. So, to all the graduates, wishing you all fair winds and a strong arm on the tiller in a world that needs you more than ever. You got this. Finisterre University of Exeter

  • From recent South Pacific voyages to eXXpedition’s northern-most expedition yet, the crew’s work continues to take ocean plastic pollution further into view. These images capture Finisterre ambassador Emily Penn and the eXXpedition crew at work in the South Pacific: collecting samples, recording data and living the day-to-day reality of a research voyage. Since these moments were captured, the crew has reached the Arctic - the furthest north eXXpedition has ever travelled. It is a significant milestone in the organisation’s mission to understand and tackle ocean plastic pollution. Behind every image of a remarkable horizon is the less visible work: early starts, shifting conditions, close quarters, endless layers and a crew working together to keep the boat and the mission moving. We’re proud to support Emily and the crew with hardy kit designed for long days and hard weather at sea. Practical support for purposeful work. We’ll be sharing more from the Arctic voyage soon. 📸 Katie Giles / Kendall Miller / Hannah Wilks / Karlijn Sibbel / Sibel Bulay / Taylor Maddalene Myers / Rowan Henthorn / Amanda Ayliffe

The best product design starts by asking a simple question: Who have we left out? For too long, adaptive outdoor gear has been treated as a niche. But the outdoors isn't exclusive - and neither should the products we create for it. At Finisterre, we've always believed in equal access to the ocean. That's why making our adaptive Yulex wetsuits part of our core rental offering felt like the right next step, because inclusivity should be part of good design. It's been great to see this conversation explored by Field Mag. The more we challenge assumptions about who outdoor products are designed for, the better our industry becomes. Thanks to the team for highlighting why accessibility isn't an add-on; it's an opportunity to build better products and help more people experience the freedom that comes from being in the sea. • At the edge of the land, stories emerge. To mark our collaboration with XTRATUF, we recently headed to Penzance with a crew connected by the sea. Along for the ride were Speech Debelle and Alexis Evelynlee from We Are Black Fish – a collective who open the door to outdoor culture for black, queer and those from the global majority through monthly hook-ups on the beach, running fishing lessons and curating group events from the shore in Kent. Our latest Broadcast feature, Island People, written by Speech and Alexis celebrates and explores Britain’s relationship with seafood through the histories of race, class and colonialism… For those looking to dive deeper, Black Fish by Speech Debelle offers a thoughtful exploration of fishing, identity, healing and community. Find out more. 🔗 https://bit.ly/4ytlPg2

"I'm most proud of what we've chosen not to do. Also that the spirit of the brand feels the same as it was 23 years ago." Part of a wider conversation with Michael Williams. Over the past 23 years, there have been countless opportunities to grow faster, follow trends or take the easier route. It hasn’t always been easy, but we've tried to stay true to why Finisterre exists and our founding beliefs. It all started with one product - a thick fleece designed to warm after a cold-water surfs on the north Cornish coast. A brand inspired by a love of the sea and a deep belief there was a better way to make product. That mindset still guides us today. I’ve always said we don’t have all the answers, but driven by an awesome team, we work hard to find innovative solutions and be a better business. Something we live and breathe every day. A big thank you to Michael for such a great conversation about the journey so far, the lessons we've learned along the way, and what comes next. Oh summer, you precious thing. It's the season where we charge up ahead of the darkness to come. Where the long days edge into nights that never end, filled with unplanned adventures and unforgettable memories. It's sun one moment, rain the next, but the fun doesn't stop until we do. It's when we chase the light, from dawn until dusk, led only by our pull to make the most of mother nature's gifts. This was the theme of our latest Finisterre shoot, captured in our own Cornish backyard. Great work to the whole team who went above and beyond as always to pull this one off. Hannah Freeman-Hoare, Steph Rogers, Bryony Lewis, Joshua Akhtar, Matt Travis, Abbi Hughes, Tyler Crewes, Zak Rayment, Danny Burrows, Rowan Trehane, Jessica Rennie and many more.
