Is sending a video better than a CV? I have thought for quite some time that the two page CV is outdated Particularly so perhaps in an AI world, they all feel to generic Could video applications be the way forward? They obviously prioritise some other skills and are very open to certain biases … But is it away around what Andy Burnham was talking about when it comes to zoom fatigue. What do people think? #CVs #recruitment #video #zoom

  • The real reason young professionals are failing in the real world We are living in an era defined by an education system that is severely out of touch. While schools place an overwhelming emphasis on rote academic performance and high exam grades, they are completely failing to equip the next generation with the foundational, real-world skills required to survive in the modern economy. Yet, against all odds, the current curriculum remains unchanged, leaving young adults entirely unprepared. The crisis stems from a massive gap in core life preparation. The mainstream education model leaves teenagers completely blind to basic financial literacy and foundational professional skills. As SheerLuxe founder Georgie Coleridge Cole Cole highlights, unless a child grows up in an entrepreneurial or financially savvy household, their baseline knowledge regarding business, commerce, and economics is effectively zero. In an economic landscape where professional survival depends on fast-paced adaptation and strategic financial planning, expecting young people to magically figure it all out when they hit the "real world" is a recipe for disaster. We thrust young adults into a highly competitive marketplace and expect them to naturally avoid crippling debt, navigate investment avenues like ISAs, master workplace communication, and budget their income—without ever teaching them the basic mechanics of how to do so. This disconnect isn't just a minor oversight; it is an economic failure. Georgie and I sat down to break down the critical need for a complete educational overhaul, the power of teaching communication and soft skills early on, and how we can rewrite the rules to make sure the next generation doesn't just graduate, but actually thrives. Andy Burnham breaking into poetry during his Jimmy's Jobs of the Future - was not something I had in my bingo card. Still it’s fascinating and I think tells us a lot about our new PM, it’s not all beer snacks and football. #poetry #Englishliterature #podcast 👋 My name is Jimmy McLoughlin OBE and i write, podcast and speak about the future of our economy through the prism of jobs, if this interests you, please follow me and or Jimmy's Jobs of the Future 🙏

  • Andy Burnham on overhauling education and technical pathways For decades, Britain’s education system has operated on a single default assumption: that university is the only true benchmark of success. While the degree route works brilliantly for many, millions of young people are left navigating an economic landscape that fails to offer a clear alternative. Yet, despite technical and vocational skills driving the backbone of regional economies, non-academic pathways are still routinely treated as second-best. The reality behind reforming education isn't about diminishing the value of university - it's about creating genuine parity for young people who thrive through practical, industry-aligned learning. By building a balanced system that values technical skills just as much as university degrees, local leaders can create fairer opportunities while strengthening regional economies. We sat down to break down why the education system needs a structural rethink, how regional leaders can bridge the skills gap, and what it takes to build effective technical pathways for the future. What a week for team Kindling! Six weeks ago we started working with Jimmy McLoughlin OBE on Jimmy's Jobs of the Future, and this week that meant supporting Jimmy sit down in No.10 with brand spanking new Prime Minister Andy Burnham to talk about youth unemployment and AI's impact on jobs. Only the second interview Andy Burnham has done since becoming PM, and the only podcast interview so far, full stop. Genuinely thrilling to be this close to a project tackling something as urgent as the jobs crisis facing 16-24 year olds - and it's a reminder of exactly why Jimmy started this: to help people see the future of work and be encouraged to really go after it. We’re loving working with Jimmy and his team and learning so much from them - shout out to the stupendous plate spinning capabilities of Thuy Dong! Link to the episode in the comments below

It's not every day that your new boss interviews the new PM at No.10 But this is the thrilling whirlwind we've come to expect in the 6 or so weeks we've been working with Jimmy McLoughlin OBE on Jimmy's Jobs of the Future The WhatsApp came in late on Sunday and by Tuesday Jimmy was sitting in No.10 opposite our new PM Andy Burnham, discussing youth unemployment and the impact of AI on jobs. This is such a huge moment for Jimmy's Jobs of the Future's for many reasons: 1. This was Andy Burnham's second only interview since becoming PM, which speaks to the huge importance of this issue and his plans to tackle it. 2. Jimmy's Jobs of the Future is the ONLY podcast interview the PM has done, a huge testament to the platform Jimmy has built. Also a fairly massive nod to the power of podcasts in today's media landscape. 3. But most importantly, the jobs crisis among 16-24 year olds cuts to the very core of our purpose on Jimmy's Jobs of the Future. Jimmy's mission from the beginning has always been to 'show people the future of work and help them go after it by…'. Six weeks in, that's exactly what's playing out. I will forever be grateful to the massive leg up I got on the careers ladder from my friend and Kindling business partner, Aggie Mellor. She intro'd me to the powers that be at Spotify way back when it was a tiny start up. That one intro changed the course of my career. So in the spirit of Andy and Jimmy, if anyone out there wants to chat careers, podcasts, commercial partnerships, intros, our DMs are always open! Link to the episode in the comments
