Kennedys’ tax disputes team acts for B&M Retail Limited in its successful appeal to the Tax Tribunal, squashing a £1.17m excise duty wrongdoing penalty. This is an important decision underscoring the importance of traders having in place strong due diligence procedures when they are dealing with alcohol in the wholesale market. If traders do not put in place effective due diligence measures and take the time to continually assess risks in their supply chains, then there will always be a material risk of receiving an excise duty wrongdoing penalty. As another season of legal walks comes to a close, we’re taking a moment to celebrate the almost 100 Kennedys colleagues who took part in legal walks across the country this summer. Teams from across our offices walked 5K and 10K routes, helping to raise vital funds for The Access to Justice Foundation and the London Legal Support Trust, which support frontline free legal advice charities and the communities they serve. The walks were also a great opportunity to step away from our desks, connect with colleagues and meet others across the legal community - with a few ice creams and some sunshine along the way. A huge thank you to everyone who joined a walk or donated to our fundraising pages, and to our coordinating team across the country. We’re already looking forward to next year!

On July 7, Christopher Carroll, Nick Williams, Sean Burns and Lucinda Lyons presented to AIG’s claims and underwriting executives in our New York office. The third event in the series, it drew more than 50 in-person and 280 virtual attendees. The presentation covered a wide range of topics, including global emerging risks and litigation trends in social inflation, third party litigation funding, social media harm, fraud, climate change, PFAS, AI and data centers. Scotland Partner Peter Demick ran the equivalent distance between Kennedys' UK offices, raising more than £3,500 for The Children's Society, Children First and Prostate Cancer UK. Each charity held a personal connection, from supporting Kennedys' UK charity partner and Children First in Scotland to raising funds for Prostate Cancer UK in memory of Peter's father. As Peter reflects: "Six of seven months into the challenge, you’re in a routine and it just becomes part of life. My colleagues were saying … I can’t believe you’re still dong this …. They kept reminding me that actually what I was doing was something quite special” Congratulations to Peter and thank you to everyone who donated and supported him along the way, from making brownies every 50 miles to cheering him across the finish line.
