Working with early adopters of preference-based rostering has been fascinating. At Mid Yorkshire Teaching NHS Trust, we've seen a 50% reduction in locum spend in the department while meeting 99.89% of clinician preferences. But one of the most important outcomes has been how clinicians feel about their rota 👇 Find out more about preference-based rostering here: https://lnkd.in/eZWWtzM8

Fair pay shouldn’t take detective work 🕵♀️ That’s why we’ve officially certified our pay calculations with Doctors Paycheck. It's crucial that NHS organisations ensure doctors are paid accurately and fairly, but when systems don’t make that simple, it can mean hours lost reconciling pay queries and inboxes full of questions. That’s where Patchwork’s Doctors Paycheck-certified pay calculations come in 🎯 Accuracy you can truly rely on, fewer pay disputes and confidence for both clinician and organisation. Thank you to the team at Doctors Paycheck for working with us to make pay processes seamless for both organisations and doctors 💰 🏥

This year, Mid Yorkshire Teaching NHS Trust did something different. They adopted the NHS's only true preference-based rostering system. Clinicians have more say over how they work. Rostering teams spend less time chasing gaps. And service demand is still met. For too long, rostering has been about asking people to fit the rota. What if the rota started working around people instead? That's what AI- powered preference-based rostering is all about. Read more about it here: https://lnkd.in/eNUF6rsa

The whole team came together in London this week for our annual Patchweek: 48 hours of hacking, a few socials, and a chance to step away from the day-to-day 🎉 The quality of what people built this year was incredible. From AI-powered ideas that were production-ready to features our customers would love tomorrow. It's great to see what can happen when people are given the space to think creatively about a problem. One hackathon idea involved using AI to craft these posts - can't see it getting off the ground personally.

Don't miss the latest edition of Shift Happens 💊 This issue dives into the reality of night shifts, from working through exhaustion to the science behind sleep, with practical advice to help you get through them. Guest edited by Dr Jonathan Andrews 👏 Read it here: https://lnkd.in/emH4uyMj --------------------------------------------------------------- Featuring additional insights from clinicians, plus helpful resources from the Royal College of Physicians, Out Of Programme, DoctorsTraining and You Okay, Doc? (+ much more)
𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐍𝐢𝐠𝐡𝐭𝐦𝐚𝐫𝐞 𝐁𝐞𝐟𝐨𝐫𝐞 𝐒𝐡𝐢𝐟𝐭𝐦𝐚𝐬 Vol 3 of Patchwork Health’s newsletter Shift Happens revolves around the topic of night shifts in healthcare. 😴 Nights are a ‘funny’ thing as a clinician. While the rest of the world around you is winding down, you wrestle your biology while trying to continue delivering healthcare in different circumstances. Less staff, less resource, fewer pathways but the problems don’t disappear. It certainly challenges you as a clinician in ways you only realise after living it. I was honoured to be asked to guest edit this volume. You’ll find topical news stories, tips and tricks on surviving nights and of course… plenty of memes! 😅 Check it out, link in the description 👇

We did something a little different with our messaging at NHS ConfedExpo this year. We wanted to start with something more human: the little moments. For NHS staff, those moments are often the first thing to be sacrificed. Family dinners. Weekends. Birthdays. Time with friends. Some of that will always be part of working in healthcare. But we genuinely believe technology can improve that. Preference-based rostering gives clinicians a voice in how their rotas are built. Clinicians submit their preferences, managers retain full oversight, and our algorithm builds fairer, more efficient rotas around them. The result? Hundreds of hours reduced on administrative efforts, thousands of pounds saved filling gaps, and clinicians given more autonomy over their working lives, something we know is a key driver of retention. Our reaction game was the perfect way to bring that idea to life: catch the little moments before they disappear. It sparked some fantastic conversations, drew queues throughout the event, and allowed us to explain what "the little moments" really means in our world. And finally, a special mention to Alex from Northumbria Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust, who somehow managed to catch all 10 in the reaction challenge. We're still not quite sure how.

Most clinicians have missed something important for work: a graduation, a wedding, a holiday. But those big moments? They're a handful a year. What can drive burnout and make a career in healthcare sometimes unsustainable is an accumulation of the ‘little moments’ we have to sacrifice. Coffee catch-ups with friends. Saturday mornings with your children. Wednesday evenings playing tennis. Dr. James Somauroo put it brilliantly when I joined him on the SomX podcast: all he needed to stay grounded as a doctor were those Wednesday evening Tennis games. But, with traditional fixed-pattern rotas, he had no say in his schedule. Obviously, no clinician expects a traditional 9-5, but the little moments in life matter more than we admit. A chronic lack of flexibility and autonomy is pushing thousands of healthcare workers to leave the NHS every year. That’s why at Patchwork Health we’ve built Preference-Based Rostering: a system that lets clinicians finally have a say in their schedule. Giving back those little moments can be the difference between a burnt-out clinician leaving the NHS, and one who is able to sustain a long, fulfilling career. Hear what Preference-Based Rostering really means for clinicians in the clip below. Or watch the full episode via the link in the comments.
