This month we bid a sad farewell to two longstanding and key members of the RenewableUK team 👋 Barnaby Wharton, our former Head of Flexibility and Grid, departs after nine years leading our work on the infrastructure and market frameworks needed to make a high-renewables system function in practice. Barney's encyclopedic knowledge encompasses grid build-out, transmission reform, connections, flexibility, storage, and hydrogen... to name but a few areas of expertise! 🤯 Ben Alcraft, our former Head of Marketing, has been with us for over a decade (as far back as the time when suits and ties were mandatory!) and has played a transformative role in our rebranding, whilst working tirelessly with our network of agencies and stakeholders to ensure our brand, events and campaigns not only look impressive but deliver measurable results. We wish Ben and Barney every success in their future roles. They will be very sorely missed 🫶

"Miatta's experience as the minister responsible for energy consumers, together with the new Prime Minister's focus on affordability and the cost of living, puts her in a strong position to drive that agenda forward. "We want to build on this by working with Government to take unnecessary costs out of the system wherever possible. Faster and more predictable planning decisions, quicker grid connections and greater certainty for investors can all help to reduce the cost of delivering new energy infrastructure, benefiting billpayers as well as businesses. Just as importantly, we need to ensure local communities see real benefits from new projects and are closely involved in shaping them, helping to build the public support needed to deliver infrastructure more quickly and successfully. "The Prime Minister has made clear that his Government's priorities are making life's essentials more affordable, reindustrialising Britain and backing domestic industry. Renewable energy can help deliver all three. That's why we're urging Ms Fahnbulleh to maximise the amount of new renewable energy capacity secured through the current auction for new projects, helping to deliver lower bills, stronger energy security, new investment and good jobs right across the UK. "Our members would also very much like to thank Ed Miliband for his service as Energy Secretary, building on over twenty years of commitment to clean power. During his most recent time in office, the Government took a number of significant steps to accelerate the deployment of renewable energy, including lifting the effective ban on onshore wind in England, progressing planning and grid reforms, and securing record levels of new capacity through clean power auctions. "These reforms have helped to strengthen the foundations for a more secure, affordable and homegrown energy system, while creating the conditions for greater investment and growth across the UK's renewable energy sector. ‼️The application window for AR8 is now open ‼️ Commenting on the launch of the window, which will remain open until 5:00pm on Friday 7 August, our CEO Tara Singh said: "Bringing forward this auction represents an important step towards strengthening Britain’s energy security, with recent global events demonstrating yet again that the best way to reduce our exposure to fossil-fuel price shocks is by generating more of our own electricity here in the UK, at the stable prices renewables offer. "This auction is expected to deliver a high level of competition between projects, thanks to Administrative Strike Prices remaining at the same level, which is exactly what secures the best value for billpayers. Additionally, the Secretary of State’s ability to review bids for a greater range of technologies, including onshore wind, floating wind and other deepwater offshore wind projects, will ensure that the budget is used in the most efficient way.
