  • Electric HGV adoption is accelerating, but selecting the right vehicles, routes, depots and charging strategy remains critical. TransitionWise founder Leo Pickford looks at what the latest registration figures really mean for fleet operators.

Sitting behind the wheel, electric trucks no longer feel like a distant future. UK electric truck registrations grew by 171% last year, but they still accounted for just 1.4% of the overall HGV market. Those two figures tell an interesting story… The first shows that electric HGV adoption is beginning to accelerate. The second shows just how early we still are and the importance of going to the right expertise if you want to get it right. A successful first deployment depends on understanding: ⚡ which routes genuinely suit today’s vehicles ⚡ where payload and range requirements align ⚡ how long vehicles actually dwell at the depot ⚡ what charging capacity is really required ⚡ whether the site has enough available power ⚡ how drivers and operational teams will adapt The question is no longer whether an electric truck can complete a journey. It is whether the vehicle, route, depot, energy supply and operation will work together as one system. That is where evidence-led planning makes the difference between a successful first cohort and an expensive experiment. At TransitionWise we ensure you get this right and take the risk out of it. Get in touch now and we can discuss next steps. #ElectricTrucks #FleetElectrification #Logistics #eHGV #FleetStrategy #TransitionWise

  • You can see our Founder, Leo Pickford at the Moving to Zero event on 17th June, where he will join a panel talking about what it really takes to electrify depots at scale. This is what is needed to accelerate the electrification of HGVs and mixed commercial vehicle fleets.

Really looking forward to joining the Moving to Zero Event on 17th June as a panellist. I'll be talking about how as commercial fleets move from pilot projects to large-scale deployment, the depot is emerging as one of the most critical enablers of the transition. This panel will explore what it really takes to electrify depots in practice - particularly for HGVs and mixed fleets operating across complex, often constrained environments. The link to join the event will be in the comments below. Please click on it to register and hopefully see you there!

  • Fleet electrification is not just a vehicle transition. For logistics operators, it is increasingly an energy strategy. As electric trucks, depot charging, warehouse roof solar, battery storage and smart energy management come together, logistics sites have the potential to become optimised microgrids. That creates opportunities to reduce peak demand, moderate grid upgrade requirements and make better use of on-site renewable generation. At TransitionWise, we help logistics firms understand how these elements fit together as one practical, investable system. Read our Founder Leo Pickford’s latest post below.

Some of the most exciting uses of AI are the ones that solve very practical problems at scale. Energy balancing is a good example. As we add more renewable energy to the grid, the challenge is not just how much we generate. It is when that energy is available, where it is needed and how quickly demand can respond. That is where AI, algorithms and smart energy management become genuinely valuable and beyond what humans can do. They can make thousands of small adjustments, continually responding to changing generation, demand and operational needs across a large area. The Optimo Energy / First Bus trial is a good example of this principle being put into practice. By intelligently flexing when electric buses charge, depot charging can help absorb excess renewable energy, including Scottish wind power, while still making sure vehicles are ready for service. That is demand side response in a very practical form. The same logic will apply to V2G. And for me, this is where truck electrification gets really interesting. For logistics operators, the opportunity is broader than any single technology provider. The challenge is not simply whether electric trucks can replace diesel trucks. It is how the whole site works as an energy system. - Warehouse roof solar. - Electric trucks. - Battery storage. - Smart charging. - Potentially vehicle-to-grid. And, where possible, a two-way grid connection. Managed properly, this can reduce peak demand, moderate the level of grid upgrade required, make better use of on-site generation and, over time, use the fleet itself as flexible energy storage. But the transport operation still has to come first. That is why logistics electrification cannot just be about buying vehicles or installing chargers. - It needs modelling. - It needs an energy strategy. - It needs a charging strategy. - It needs the right commercial case. And it needs the right technology in the right place. Done properly, it becomes much more than a vehicle replacement exercise. It becomes a microgrid opportunity. That is the vision we have at TransitionWise. We help logistics firms work out how trucks, chargers, solar, batteries, grid connections and optimisation technology can fit together as one practical, investable system. Because the value is not just in the technology. It is in knowing where it fits, when it pays back, how it supports the operation and how to avoid expensive mistakes. If you are thinking about fleet electrification, grid constraints or how to make the numbers work, get in touch. #FleetElectrification #ElectricTrucks #SmartCharging #Microgrids #EnergyManagement #DemandSideResponse #V2G #TransitionWise

  • 🚛 Diesel supply pressures aren’t just a headline — they’re a reality for transport operators across the UK. These fluctuations highlight how reliant the sector is on diesel and the risks that come with it. At #TransitionWise, we help transport businesses explore practical strategies to transition to electric fleets. Moving to electric isn’t only about sustainability — it’s also a way to reduce exposure to volatile fuel markets, improve operational resilience, and future-proof logistics.

This Sky News report highlights growing concerns around global fuel shortages — but the impact isn’t being felt equally. In the UK, diesel prices remain particularly exposed. Between limited domestic refining capacity, reliance on imports, and structural demand in logistics and agriculture, diesel markets are under much tighter pressure than petrol. It’s a reminder that “global shortages” don’t translate evenly at a local level — and why supply chain resilience still matters more than ever. Worth a watch — interested to hear how others see this playing out over the next 6–12 months. Thanks also to John Buckoke AuDHD for flagging this up. https://lnkd.in/eQU2GhCJ

  • From Leo’s earlier thoughts on zero‑emission logistics to his latest take on AI and grid innovation — the pace of change keeps accelerating. At TransitionWise, we’re here to help businesses stay ahead of it. #EnergyTransition #EVTrucks #SmartGrid #AIinEnergy

So, we still have 20% of the world’s oil supply blocked off. This is going to make driving for the majority very expensive as fuel prices shoot up and more will look to switch to EV. A silver lining you could say in an otherwise very cruel World right now. However, whilst car EV sales in the UK are currently around 1 in 4, trucks are ~1.5%, with 0.3% of the fleet electric. The transition can speed up, but it’s starting from a low base and electric trucks can’t just pull in at your average CPO as they require large bays. We also have a lot of work to do on the grid. However, global events will apply pressure in the right places and speed things up. Meanwhile, Tesla Energy entered the UK market this week and we will see some disruptive dynamics in the way electricity is packaged up, with AI being used both for compliance and for playing in the market. Peak shaving, load shifting and demand response, plus the integration of vehicles, batteries, solar… the whole shebang automated! I always said that if AI should be used for something, it’s this! No human could keep up with what’s needed. #EnergyTransition #CleanEnergy #Decarbonisation #NetZero #Sustainability #TransitionWise

"In many cases they're going to have depots in different locations. This is something that not many realise" Today sees the release of the second episode of the Commercial The EV Musings Podcast. In this conversation, Leo Pickford, founder and CEO of TransitionWise, discusses the electrification of heavy goods vehicles and his consultancy's role in facilitating this transition. He shares insights from his background in logistics, the challenges of introducing electric trucks, and the importance of change management in the process. Fleet electrification - especially at the HGV level - is a hot topic today. There are many companies wanting to do it and the barriers they are encountering are all very similar - grid connections, cost issues, and a general lack of understanding of the 'right' way to do things to get the best results. The full discussion also covers TransitionWise's smart products, target market, and a significant project with the London Ambulance Service, highlighting the urgency of transitioning to electric vehicles in the logistics sector. • Synchronisation. That’s what makes electric truck transitions succeed. If everything isn’t lined up on the start line: the right vehicles, the right chargers, sufficient grid capacity, digital systems that actually support the operation, and a clear understanding of the impact on people, things will unravel quickly. But let’s zoom out. In a fully electrified world, is your operation even the same as it is today? You could well have: - Different routes. - Different depot layouts. - Different maintenance models. - Different planning assumptions. And the big one… Maybe even different depot locations! The real conversation isn’t just about managing a project well. It’s about redesigning the operation first so that it wins in the new reality. If that conversation would be useful, you can talk to TransitionWise. #FleetElectrification #ElectricTrucks #OperationalDesign #SystemsThinking #TransitionWise #LogisticsTransformation #EnergyTransition
