Doug Zarkin was the first ever CMO of Take 5 Oil Change, a $1.4bn auto services business with 1,400 locations across North America, more than half of them franchisee owned. He joins Smarter at Dinner with Noah Horner. Before that he spent 11 years as CMO of Pearle Vision at EssilorLuxottica, where he wrote and delivered two consecutive five year plans and took the brand into the top 30 franchise brands in the world. Earlier in his career he scaled Victoria's Secret Pink, and sold lip gloss door to door as an Avon lady. He also wrote Moving Your Brand Out of the Friend Zone. We cover the buy one get one decision at Pearle Vision that looked obvious on a spreadsheet and cost the business traffic, his brand value equation of experience over price, and what he learned talking to franchisees who had fired them. Plus why he thinks AI is the most educated intern you could ever hire, why marketing is not a panacea for a broken business, and how he took an oil change brand onto The Today Show and The Kelly Clarkson Show. How are marketers actually using PIP day to day? Take Jenna Kamal. Here are 3 ways PIP makes her marketing life easier: 1. 📇 CRM personalization: Her HubSpot was a mess. Now it's a couple of prompts. PIP builds her a clean list of who to talk to, then writes the bespoke nurture for them. Hours of work, gone. 2. 📝 Content reviews: Reviewing collateral is every marketer's biggest gripe. Jenna uploads it, PIP marks it up. It's trained on her brand guidelines, so the feedback is actually usable and she's not the bottleneck anymore. 3. 📊 Reporting and analytics: Too many meetings, everyone on a different dashboard, no clear view. PIP pulls it into one, across every channel, from live data. She walks in knowing exactly how marketing's doing. That's the real unlock. PIP does the grunt work so Jenna can get on with the marketing.

AI is a great leveller for mid market American businesses. Allowing many of them to compete against much bigger brands with bigger budgets & teams for the first time. Lisa Bowman, who leads marketing at the The Cleaning Authority explains why:

How are travel brands using PIP? Here's what's got them excited. Travel brands are sitting on goldmines of data. They know their customers intimately. What they book, when they book, what they love. The problem was always using it. So most comms stayed generic. "Hey Dave, you booked last year. Fancy going again?" One of a thousand emails Dave deletes that morning. Now it's different. PIP knows Dave wants the room facing the slopes. It knows he books the moment there's a snow forecast. So the message meets him right there, on WhatsApp or email, when he's actually ready to book. That's the real unlock. Super personalised CRM campaigns, at scale, without the grunt hours it used to take. For the first time, travel brands get to talk to every customer like they actually know them.

How are hospitality brands using PIP? Here's what's got mid-market hospitality brands excited about PIP. Hyperlocal campaigns are how they win. The right message, the right store, the right moment. The problem was always speed. By the time you'd briefed it, built it and picked the stores, the moment had passed. Now it's a couple of prompts. Built at the speed of culture, targeted down to specific stores. That's the real unlock. Smaller, leaner teams competing with the marketing budgets of a Chick-fil-A, Chipotle or a Hilton. For the first time they get to play on the same pitch as the big hospitality & restaurant brands. PIP is the leveller.

Ok this one's a great example of what our customers do with PIP, our AI marketing platform. Detroit had a massive heatwave last week. One of our customers, an online and in-store retailer, wanted to know something simple: was the heat sending people online, or were they still coming into stores? Normally that's a whole project. Pull the online numbers, pull the in-store numbers, find the weather data, get a few people together, build the spreadsheets, compare everything, and hopefully have an answer in a few days. They did it in two prompts. Threw all of it into PIP, got the insight, and had a campaign live the next day. Off the back of the weather. Our VP of Customer Success Ellie sees this constantly. Teams sitting on piles of scattered data that used to take forever to make sense of. That's the whole point of PIP. Turn the mess into a campaign you can ship the same day.
