Today, we welcome the approval of development funding for Viking CCS from the UK Government, which is a critical step in progressing our project in the Humber. The funding will support further technical, commercial and delivery work needed to move Viking CCS towards FID. The project can make a significant contribution to decarbonisation in one of the UK’s most important industrial regions, while also helping to unlock material investment, jobs and wider economic benefits locally and nationally. Viking CCS remains one of the most technically and commercially mature CCS projects in the UK and is working towards FID in this parliament, subject to project readiness and affordability. 🌍 A solid step forward for European decarbonisation Today, Lord Whitehead signed the first-ever UK–London Protocol arrangement with Belgium 🇬🇧🤝🇧🇪 — a landmark agreement placing both countries at the forefront of European carbon capture and storage (CCS) cooperation. To mark this milestone, we brought together leading EU CCS stakeholders for a breakfast discussion ☕ on how strengthened UK–EU collaboration can drive CCUS deployment at scale. It's great to hear from Willow as she shares her thoughts on the role of #CCS in shaping the Humber's industrial future. We will only be able to deliver Viking CCS with a skilled workforce, one that includes apprentices and existing, experienced workers together. We're working with CATCH to ensure such opportunities exist and are accessible to those in the region and beyond. Ensuring we have the skilled workforce in place and ready to go when Viking CCS moves to the construction phase will be essential. We therefore work very closely with project partners including Phillips 66 and CATCH - among others - to ensure opportunities are on offer for training and skills development linked to the deployment of #CCS in the Humber. It's great to hear from Harry about the work he's doing with Phillips 66. The Carbon Capture and Storage Association event in April was a fantastic moment where apprentices from different clusters came together to network and discuss these opportunities - all supported by Energy Minister Michael Shanks. The Humber is an ideal region to deploy #CCS and the Viking project is on track to reaching a final investment decision in this parliament. Happy National Apprenticeship Week! And what a brilliant way to kick things off with CATCH apprentices attending a Downing Street Apprenticeship event at No.10! It's great to see recognition of the hard working individuals at CATCH who will form the building blocks of the industries we need to re-industrialise, including via #CCS in the Humber. At Viking CCS, we are proud to work with CATCH to ensure the workforce is ready to mobilise when we start construction and become operational over the next few years. CATCH is a nationally recognised, industry-led training centre supporting skills development across the energy, process engineering and industrial sectors. The organisation invests heavily in state-of-the-art facilities, supported by strong collaboration with its members and partners. This includes investment from Viking CCS partners Phillips 66 Limited, Harbour Energy, Drax Group and Associated British Ports (ABP), alongside Air Products and Uniper, as well as funding from the Humber Freeport and ECITB. Together, this support has enabled the development the CATCH facilities, with further investment underway through a new conference centre due to open in April this year. Fantastic news today as Cory has received approval for its Development Consent Order application to build an industry-leading #CCS project at its Riverside energy from waste facilities in Belvedere. The project will make a material contribution to London’s decarbonisation efforts by capturing c. 1.4 million tonnes of CO2 a year. Once captured, the carbon dioxide from their facility will be liquefied and transported via ship for permanent storage under the North Sea. At Viking CCS, we are proud to work closely with Cory so that in the future, their captured carbon can be stored in the Viking store in the Southern North Sea. This is a real-world example of regions working together to deliver economic growth for the UK.
