The Khuff-Field is located in the Kotla graben which is adjacent to the Dalira and Beda Platforms and the ZelIa and Marada Troughs. These features developed in response to preLate Cretaceous rifting and controlled the sedimentary depositional patterns during the Late Cretaceous and Early Tertiary. A seismic modelling software was used to build a geological model and to validate the geological interpretation. The validation was done by simulating propagation of seismic energy through the model to generate and test seismic model over the internal structure of a thick carbonate deposits of the Upper Cretaceous (Maastrichian) to Eocene sediments, in order to understand the distribution of the facies and their relationship to structural features in the area. The resulting synthetic records were processed and stacked. Comparison between the synthetic and the real section was encouraging. This demonstrated that the use of a seismic modelling technique is applicable to the Khuff Field.

The aim of the study was to characterize the subsurface materials based on seismic P-S wave velocities as well as to correlate those data with the lithologic logs and the standard penetration test (SPT) N-values. The study area is about 40 km squares, consisting of shale, slate and siltstones of the Kenny Hill Formation. Seismic surveys were carried out using ABEM MK 3 as a recording seismograph, and 24 units of 14Hz-frequency geophones 'to record the incoming seismic waves. The data were processed using an OPTIM software to produce sections of 20 velocity model profiles. Results show P-wave velocity of clayey silt (SPT=3-11) is ranging from 300-500mls and S-wave velocity is ranging from 80-100mls. P-wave velocity value for sandy silt (N=12-16) is ranging from 500-800mls and S-wave velocity is found ranging from 100-300mls. P-wave velocity value representing hard silt with gravel (N=20-50) is ranging from 900-1600mls and S-wave velocity is ranging from 300-450mls. The S-wave velocity obtained from seismic surveys show only slight difference in values compared with those calculated using SPT N values. The calculated Poisson ratio value ranging from 0.43-0.47, representing clayey-silt and sandysilt. Velocity model sections were correlated well with the lithologic and SPT N values at each borehole. In the study area, the SPT test was terminated when the N value reached 50 which corresponds to the hard gravelly silt soil. The SPT test was only conducted in soft soil zone without penetrating the bedrock, whereas for the seismic survey, some of the 20 velocity model cross sections show P-wave velocity values range from 3500 to 4000mls at a depth of more than 15m. This high velocity values can be interpreted as representing slightly weathered to fresh rock.

The boreholes located close to the seismic lines were drilled at depths ranging from 12 to 40 metres. By comparing the borehole data with the seismic record, empirical relationships between the character of the seismic records and the corresponding lithology was established. The seismic data were analysed using a velocity of 1,600 mlsec to convert the two way travel times into depth. Four distinct lithological units were recognized and classified into units A, B, C, and D. The uppermost unit, D representing soft clay with some coarse sand is characterized by strong horizontal stratification on seismic profiles. Unit C which is made up of medium to coarse sand with some clay and shell fragments is recognized by a chaotic reflection pattern in seismic records. Unit B is represented by dense silty sand with numerous mica flakes and it is interpreted as weathered granite. The lower most unit, A comprises lowly weathered to fresh coarse grained granites or bedrock and shows up as a domed reflection pattern on seismic sections. Using these empirical relationships, all the four seismic profiles were interpreted and analysed.

The thicknesses of individual subsurface layers as well as their internal structures were determined together with the depth to granite bedrock based on reflection seismic data. Correlation with borehole data supported the validity of the interpretation conducted.

Ground investigation employing seismic refraction survey was conducted followed by trial pits, Macintosh probe and wash drilling with standard penetration tests (8PT). Laboratory tests that includes classifications, drained shear box and consolidated undrained triaxial with pore pressure measurements were also carried out. The results of the velocity profile from several spread lines have indicated a possible shallow failure from a weak soil material that overlie a deeper sliding failure mass. The two possible sliding surfaces interpreted from the seismic velocity profiles were found to correlate well with the Macintosh probe and the 8PT conducted on adjacent boreholes. A lateral variation in the velocity profiles from several spread lines have shown that the dominantly argillaceous material could be delineated from the dominantly arenaceous material that has been unaffected in the slide and conforms well with the geological facies of the site. The topography of the post failure ground level and the probable slip surface, interpreted from the seismic refraction profiles were then represented using a 3-D graphic software in order to evaluate the overall sliding mass.
