2 This thesis examines of the role of Bede in the creation of an English national identity by considering the use, re-use and transmission of the Historia Ecclesiastica across the Anglo-Saxon period. Bede's exemplary and providential history had created an image of an idealised past to inspire change in the present, and these models resonated with writers throughout this period. This study engages with the legacy of Bede's text by surveying a wide range of case studies from across Anglo-Saxon England with attention to a broad spectrum of generic, geographical and political contexts from the eighth to the early eleventh centuries, in Latin and vernacular English.

Qãdl Lamak ibn Malik al-Hammãdl (d. с. 491/1097) was one of the main political and religious figures in Sulayhid Yemen. He was responsible for setting the base of the Fatimid-Ismâcïlï dďwah in Yemen. The present paper deals with the role he played in establishing Sulayhid-Fatimid relations, his journey to Cairo during the time of al-Mustansir, and the way it was portrayed in the only source we have on this particular event, and that is Tuhfat al-Qulub by the third dacl mutlaq Hãtim ibn Ibrahim al-Hãmidl (d. 596/1199).

This article surveys the available sources for the history of the Ṭayyibī Ismāʿīlī daʿwa in Yemen, in particular in the years leading up to its relocation to India in 974/1566 and beyond. To date, this period has received little attention from historians of Yemen and Ismāʿīlism due to a lack of available sources, which was caused by the exclusive nature of the community and the hostility it has faced throughout its history. The present contribution is a first step in closing this gap in Yemeni and Ismāʿīlī history. A sample from a collection of correspondence exchanged between the daʿwa officials in Yemen and India (Qarāṭīs al-Yaman) is edited in an appendix.
