The work analyzes the contributions that phonological theory and recent researches in the field o... more The work analyzes the contributions that phonological theory and recent researches in the field of natural grapholinguistics can offer to clarify the functioning of ancient syllabic scripts of the Aegean of the first and second millennium B.C. Starting from this theoretical basis, a method is developed to identify possible cases of the writing of consonant groups attested in a syllabic writing with open syllables such as Minoan Linear A. An analysis extended to the whole corpus of this writing highlights both the lack of standardization in the spellings adopted and the tendency to extensively note the segments of each consonant group. The results of the Linear A spelling are compared with the analogous strategies adopted by the other syllabic scripts which are connected in a more or less direct way with Linear A, namely Linear B, Cypro-Minoan and Classical Cypriot Syllabary. This comparison makes it possible to identify a line of continuity, defined by the tendency to write as accurate as possible each segment of a consonant group, a line which unites Linear A with Cypro-Minoan and the Classic Cypriot Syllabary; with respect to this orthographic tradition, the spelling strategy adopted by Linear B, which is characterized by the omission of the codasegments and by the spelling of only the onset segments, appears as an isolate episode, which has been related to the particular bureaucratic-administrative purpose of this writing. Finally, some possible explanations of the different orthographic strategies are proposed, both from the perspective of the typology of the writing systems, and in relation to the specific historical coordinates and the literacy that characterizes the different scripts examined.

Il complesso delle convenzioni ortografiche seguite dagli scribi-funzionari micenei e successivam... more Il complesso delle convenzioni ortografiche seguite dagli scribi-funzionari micenei e successivamente dagli utenti del sillabario cipriota classico per rendere attraverso due scritture sillabiche a sillabe aperte la complessa fonotattica del greco, ricca di gruppi consonantici, costituisce una materia né di piana descrizione né di facile sistematizzazione. Il volume affronta questa problematica (studiata di solito nell'ambito della storia delle scritture antiche), mettendo a frutto gli apporti di alcune correnti della linguistica contemporanea: la fonologia, e in particolare il ruolo che alla sillaba è attribuito come unità fonologica, la psicolinguistica, per ciò che attiene l'analisi e la valutazione degli errori e dei lapsus del parlante e dello scrivente, infine quella che con una felice definizione è stata denominata come l'"antropologia della scrittura", qui applicata a determinare il modus operandi delle figure che nel mondo miceneo e nella Cipro classica ed ellenistica hanno praticato la scrittura sillabica. La combinazione di queste diverse prospettive permette di spiegare le convenzioni ortografiche seguite dagli scribi micenei e ciprioti come il risultato e il riflesso della sillabazione spontanea che ogni parlante opera del continuum linguistico, restituendo così tale prassi scrittoria ad un atteggiamento di naturalezza e spontaneità, che si orienta in direzione decisamente diversa dalle spiegazioni finora offerte di tale questione.

Il lavoro si propone di verificare quali indicazioni possano venire all'interpretazione della... more Il lavoro si propone di verificare quali indicazioni possano venire all'interpretazione della cosiddetta formula di libagione dall'esame di tutti gli elementi esterni a questo genere di manufatti, ed in particolare dalle pratiche cultuali nel cui ambito le tavole trovavano il loro impiego. L'insieme degli elementi così raccolti permette di proporre un'interpretazione delle due frasi di cui la formula si compone e di avanzare qualche ipotesi sul funzionamento di alcuni aspetti della lingua minoica.
