As far as vegetable organic cultivation is concerned, the early potato has gained very much promi... more As far as vegetable organic cultivation is concerned, the early potato has gained very much prominence in the last few years in Italy. Most of this kind of cultivation takes place in the South including east Sicily that particularly stands out for its rich crops. According to the results of an economic-agricultural survey of a group of representative companies, solanaceous plant cultivation seems to guarantee good profits to all people involved in this market, on condition that this is run in a professional way and its introduction to the market is the result of accurate studies. Furthermore, the positive trend that has characterized the market since the beginning is going to become more and more solid in the years to come. The analysis concerning the early potato started from productions, including the economic aspects, up to the market, focusing on prices and exportation on one side and on the route for the product to reach that kind of consumers who buy organic products on the other.

Citrus bacterial canker (CBC) is a severe disease affecting citrus worldwide. Mediterranean area ... more Citrus bacterial canker (CBC) is a severe disease affecting citrus worldwide. Mediterranean area if free of CBC, ORPRAMed project aims at assessing the introduction risk of CBC through Citrus rutaceous relatives (CRR), especially those not covered by 2000/29EC Directive. Despite the high agricultural significance of CBC, there are not recent and in depth studies about the interaction between CRR and Xanthomonas citri subsp. citri (Xcc) and Xanthomonas fuscans subsp. aurantifolii (Xfa), causal agents of CBC. The project consortium includes Italian, Spanish, French and Turkish research centres and universities with expertise from agriculture economics to plant pathology and genomics. A selection of CRR will be assayed for the resistance/susceptibly to CBC, moreover rutaceous spedies trade flows will be investigated, as well as the survival mechanisms and fitness on CRR of Xcc and Xfa strains representative of their pathological and genetic diversity. Finally, the genome of Murraya paniculata (sel.2 from Florida Citrus Arboretum, Winter Haven, Florida, USA) will be sequenced as well as transcriptomic analysis performed to highlight the main genes involved in the disease. The project results will contribute to update information on the trade of Rutaceae, acquire new data on the behaviour of ornamental Rutaceae regarding Xcc, expand the knowledge about the epi-endophytic colonization of the pathogen and update the European import-export regulation on plant protection. In this context, particular attention was paid to quality wine productions by defining the consistency and the main characteristics of the supply. This research also includes a trend analysis of consumers’ demand concerning the different typologies of wines and the observation of quality wine price trends carried out over the GDO sector and to the specialized one in the urban area of Catania.

Il rapporto tra conservazione e sviluppo, che caratterizza l'attuale dibattito dell'intera comuni... more Il rapporto tra conservazione e sviluppo, che caratterizza l'attuale dibattito dell'intera comunità internazionale, da un lato spinge all'elaborazione di strategie "localmente" conservative e dall'altro porta alla ricerca di sinergie tra sistemi economici ed ecologici, secondo forme innovative di interazione tra ambiente e società per la gestione delle aree protette [1-3]. La Legge quadro sulle Aree Protette, L. n. 394/91, è stata inizialmente proposta come una regolamentazione innovativa dell'uso del territorio, cercando di superare una tendenza alla "museificazione" del paesaggio [4]. In particolare, infatti, l'art. 1 recita, che la legge "…in attuazione degli articoli 9 e 32 della Costituzione e nel rispetto degli accordi internazionali, detta principi fondamentali per l'istituzione e la gestione delle aree naturali protette, al fine di garantire e di promuovere, in forma coordinata, la conservazione e la valorizzazione del patrimonio naturale del paese…".
