In this study, we seek to understand the capabilities, strengths, and limitations of different Automatic Speech Recognition (ASR) applications with reference to healthcare dialogue. More specifically, this study aims to answer the following research question: Do some textual or contextual features (e.g. speech rate, background noise, text length, syntactic complexity) impact more than others on the accuracy and speed of ASR applications? Are all ASR applications equally influenced by the different textual and contextual features? The results of this evaluation will support the selection of the most suitable software application based on settings and needs.

For this reason, software tools specifically devoted to the simplification of medical texts, including reports, have been developed. In this paper, we analysed the performance of two different text simplification tools in a sample of fifty medical reports in English. Both tools support lexical simplification, while one of the tools also provides suggestions for syntactic simplification. We compared the two tools by calculating the readability index of each medical report before and after being processed by the tools. To this aim, we used two different readability formulas. Both tools succeeded in producing some degree of simplification; however, their performance strongly varied depending on the text and the readability formula considered.

The aim of the project is to analyse the use of real-time captioning to facilitate communication by healthcare professionals with hearing-impaired patients, with foreigners and in situations where hearing barriers are present. The project contributes to enriching the body of research on real-time subtitling and doctor-patient communication. It also aims to experiment with and improve on existing technologies. The article begins by examining the difficulties involved in health professional-patient communication, while section 2 summarises the existing literature, section 3 presents real-time subtitling and the main technologies available, section 4 sets out the project aims and methodology and section 5 suggests the possible implications of the study.
