This article examines the genetic edition of the Quarantana – the 1840-1842 edition of Alessandro... more This article examines the genetic edition of the Quarantana – the 1840-1842 edition of Alessandro Manzoni’s Promessi sposi – recently published by Barbara Colli (2023), assessing her methodological choices and their impact on the edition’s usability. Three main issues are discussed: the adoption of the label “genetic edition” without a full account of the theoretical framework it implies; an apparatus that, despite its considerable documentary scope, proves hard to navigate owing to a proliferation of sigla, inconsistent diacritical conventions, and invariant passages within individual entries. Ultimately, the most far-reaching concern is the decision not to establish a critical text, with every apparatus entry closing on a siglum (Q) that corresponds to no identifiable text.

This paper presents LeggoManzoni, a digital edition of Alessandro Manzoni's I promessi sposi that... more This paper presents LeggoManzoni, a digital edition of Alessandro Manzoni's I promessi sposi that tests the effectiveness of TEI encoding as a unified framework for managing complex textual relationships. The project aligns forty Italian commented editions from 1893 to 2021 and fourteen translations in ten languages (1845-2022) with the original text of the 1840-42 edition. We describe an investigative standoff markup approach that keeps the source text separate from commentaries and translations while maintaining accurate references through automated alignment pipelines. The commentary pipeline processes digitized historical editions and implements a flexible text-matching algorithm with a 70% match threshold, achieving 87% accuracy on 2.441 processed comments. For translations, we use the Bertalign algorithm, configuring broader alignment parameters to account for cross-linguistic variation. Both pipelines generate TEI-compliant files using the same encoding pattern based on <note> elements with word-level references, allowing easy integration through XSLT transformations. The outcome of the project demonstrates TEI's ability to serve as a sustainable foundation for multilingual digital editions, bridging scholarly research and educational applications while ensuring long-term preservation through convertibility to emerging formats.

This paper discusses the outcomes of the critical edition project of I Promessi sposi, initiated ... more This paper discusses the outcomes of the critical edition project of I Promessi sposi, initiated in 2006 under the direction of Dante Isella and completed in 2022 with Donatella Martinelli’s edition of the Ventisettana, later supplemented in 2023 by Barbara Colli’s edition of the Quarantana. Examining the stages and results of this ambitious philological endeavour offers an opportunity to assess the methodological advancements in Manzonian philology over time and the extent to which a systematic integration of these four editions has been achieved or, in some respects, overlooked. Furthermore, the paper explores how a digital remediation could enhance this systemic approach, fostering a more interconnected and dynamic representation of the text’s evolution. The discussion extends to the usability of critical editions, their reception among scholars and students, and the broader implications of editorial choices on literary interpretation.

Nello specifico il contributo presenta il progetto Leggo Manzoni e descrive le funzionalità della prima versione della piattaforma dedicata alla consultazione di 40 commenti al romanzo manzoniano (in aggiornamento e consultabile qui: https://projects.dharc.unibo.it/leggomanzoni/).

Indagando il panorama delle edizioni critiche digitali, e in particolare quelle basate sulla rapp... more Indagando il panorama delle edizioni critiche digitali, e in particolare quelle basate sulla rappresentazione di manoscritti moderni, balza all'occhio una certa tendenza documentariodiplomatica dei prodotti realizzati. Tali edizioni sembrano rispondere a un'impostazione teorica di ascendenza bédieriana, centrate come sono sulla rappresentazione di singoli testimoni di rado attenta all'evoluzione del procedere correttorio dell'autore sul testo e molto più frequentemente volta esclusivamente alla trascrizione diplomatica della fonte. Tra le possibili ragioni di tale stato di fatto, il presente contributo individua una maggior adeguatezza di alcuni strumenti e linguaggi digitali a questo tipo di approccio ecdotico. A ciò si aggiunge la difficoltà concreta della rappresentazione digitale della dimensione diacronica, mostrata attraverso una rapida carrellata di riflessioni metodologiche e esempi di realizzazione. Preso dunque atto della tendenza dominante e della difficoltà di procedere in direzione diversa, pare comunque possibile una riflessione in prospettiva per le edizioni digitali genetiche, non solo necessarie, almeno per determinate situazioni testuali, ma anche realizzabili, come dimostrano alcuni progetti e sperimentazioni in corso (Saba 2021, VaSto 2022 e Il Conte di Carmagnola), che chiudono il contributo.

Il contributo anticipa alcune delle considerazioni ecdotiche consentite dallo studio del manoscri... more Il contributo anticipa alcune delle considerazioni ecdotiche consentite dallo studio del manoscritto inedito della copia censura del Conte di Carmagnola, testimone prezioso per un'indagine sulle ultime fasi del lavoro di Manzoni sulla tragedia, nel momento cruciale del passaggio dalla rielaborazione privata alla pubblicazione. Il reperimento del manoscritto, a lungo ignorato dopo una prima segnalazione nel 1990, rende infatti necessaria la realizzazione di una nuova edizione critica che consenta di riconsiderare le ultime fasi elaborative dell'opera e che sia anche occasione per un aggiornamento nella formalizzazione dell'apparato critico alle ultime proposte dalla filologia d'autore. Il saggio riassume alcuni risultati delle ricerche finora svolte e rende succintamente conto delle ricadute dell'impostazione del nuovo apparato critico in termini di leggibilità e comprensione.

Il presente contributo si propone di descrivere un caso concreto di didattica nell’ambito delle D... more Il presente contributo si propone di descrivere un caso concreto di didattica nell’ambito delle DH, attualmente in corso di svolgimento presso il dipartimento FICLIT dell’Università di Bologna: una serie di laboratori per la marcatura XML/TEI di testi di Alessandro Manzoni, inserita all’interno del PRIN Manzonionline: carte, libri, edizioni, strumenti. Il progetto è dedicato alla creazione di un ambiente digitale nel quale saranno resi disponibili e consultabili tutti i materiali relativi al lavoro dell’autore, dai manoscritti alle biblioteche, dalla bibliografia critica alle opere. L’obiettivo è dunque quello di presentare un esperimento di didattica integrato all’interno di un progetto di ricerca e di analizzare, attraverso la somministrazione di un breve questionario di valutazione, la risposta degli studenti di due distinti laboratori, svolti seguendo metodologie didattiche differenti. In tal modo si potrà testare quale approccio didattico risulti non solo più vicino alle esigenze degli studenti, ma anche più funzionale all’erogazione delle competenze di base previste dall’insegnamento e a una reale comprensione del funzionamento, delle potenzialità e delle criticità del vocabolario TEI per la codifica di testi letterari moderni. Si analizzeranno anche limiti e benefici dell’approccio collaborativo tra didattica e ricerca adottato per fornire competenze teoriche e pratiche di base per l’uso del linguaggio XML/TEI e collocare gli studenti in un progetto reale e percepito come utile per la comunità scientifica, contesto ideale per favorire una maggiore consapevolezza dell’effettivo funzionamento di un progetto di ricerca.

Resources are the outcome of a seminar on the digitization of fragments in ancient Greek carried ... more Resources are the outcome of a seminar on the digitization of fragments in ancient Greek carried out online at the University of Parma on February 2021, 16th, 17th, 19th, 24th and 26th. Seminar provided practical skills in XML / TEI coding of ancient literary texts, as well as an overview of the state of the art in the field of scientific and digital critical editions. Students worked on the XML / TEI (text and critical apparatus) coding of selected fragments of Archilochus of Paro, thus being able to directly test the potential of digital philology. The work was carried out under the supervision of Anika Nicolosi (University of Parma) with the collaboration of Beatrice Nava (University of Bologna). L'intervento ha lo scopo di presentare un progetto di edizione digitale della tragedia manzoniana... more L'intervento ha lo scopo di presentare un progetto di edizione digitale della tragedia manzoniana Il Conte di Carmagnola, concentrandosi sulle specificità filologiche e sulle strategie da adottare a livello di codifica di un’opera a tradizione complessa, che si è potuta recentemente giovare della scoperta di un testimone manoscritto inedito (copia censura). L’obiettivo è quello di discutere una tipologia di digital scholarly edition non ancora rappresentata nel panorama delle DH, nel quale non paiono riscontrarsi esempi di edizione in grado di sostenere – in particolare per quanto riguarda la codifica e fruizione dell’apparato – opere con tradizioni di difficile sistemazione critica. Verranno messe in luce, attraverso un breve esempio tratto dall’edizione critica di riferimento della tragedia (Bardazzi 1985), le difficoltà di formalizzazione e rappresentazione dell’apparato, che attente operazioni di codifica consentirebbero di chiarire e semplificare. In particolare si evidenzierà, fornendo anche un esempio di apparato codificato in XML TEI, come le operazioni di markup permettano di risolvere problemi di individuazione e resa della diacronia degli interventi variantistici dell’autore, che ritorna a più riprese sui propri manoscritti, modificandoli anche di molto. Ciò permette inoltre di riflettere sui limiti del linguaggio XML TEI per la rappresentazione di casi complessi come quello del Carmagnola, e dunque di molti dei testi centrali della nostra letteratura nazionale.

Indeed, DH approaches could become a means of building models for complex realities, analyzing them with computational methods and sharing the results with a broader public. Ancient texts have a complex tradition, which includes many witnesses (texts that handed down other texts) and different typologies of supports (papyri, manuscripts, and epigraphs). These texts are the basis of all European Literatures and it is crucial to spread their knowledge, in a reliable and easy way. Our project on ancient Greek fragmentary poetry (DEA-Digital Edition of Archilochus: New models and tools for authoring, editing and indexing an ancient Greek fragmentary author), growing out of the existing experience, tries to define a TEI-based digital critical edition combined with NLP techniques and semantic web technologies. Our goal is to provide a complete and reliable tool for scholars, suitable for critical studies in Classics, and a user-friendly environment also for non-specialist users. The project represents one of the attempts within the context of CLARIN-IT to contribute to the wider impact of CLARIN on the specific Italian community interested in Digital Classics. this volume undertakes a critical cultural project: the presentation of a series of fundamental e... more this volume undertakes a critical cultural project: the presentation of a series of fundamental essays by key figures in the American tradition of textual scholarship in Italian translation. The editor, Michelangelo Zaccarello, a long-standing member of both the Society of Italian Philologists and the Society for Textual Scholarship, the American philological association devoted to the study of texts and textuality in English as well as work in other languages, is in a privileged position both to observe the discontinuity between the Italian and the Anglo-American philological environments and to put these different scholarly traditions in meaningful dialogue through a common focus on the promises and challenges of the digital. Indeed, the diverse essays in the volume are united by their interest in the deep modifications that the digital medium effects in the processes of text production, circulation, and reading, as well as its consequences for editorial practice and philological research. While the volume usefully touches on subject areas still underrepresented in Italian textual studies (e.g., the textual reliability of e-books or of texts digitalized with Optical Character Recognition), its central concern is with the philological questions posed by born-digital texts. Here, Zaccarello calls for new attention to digital materiality and proposes that many of the practices associated with traditional textual scholarship (e.g., paleography) remain relevant to philological research in the digital horizon. Far from being an oxymoron, the "material digital", he argues, is manifest both in the born-digital text itself and in the hardware and software used for the production and preservation of the text. Zaccarello also summons us to consider the impact of the digital on our thinking about such traditional subjects as authorial intention, the diffusion of errors, and the conservation of transitory variants. The essays in the volume encompass both complete translations and key excerpts of published works. The work of the textual scholar and theorist Jerome McGann opens the volume with an essay challenging and complicating the notion of authorial intention through an analysis of the many social and historical agents involved in the production of the literary text. McGann's paradigm-shifting work is followed by Susan Hockey's reflections on the ways in which digital textuality-markup language, image manipulation, etc.-revolutionizes knowledge access. In sum, it opens a fruitful dialogue between two strikingly different philological worlds that have much to learn from each other.

I'm the one who gets to look" (Zalewski 1997). When interviewed about the McLoad Portable Collator, a peculiar contraption he fabricated to compare two versions of a text and detect the differences between them, Randall McLoad perfectly summarized the merits of using a tool to study textual variation: in addition to neatly computing the difference between two or more versions, a comparison tool can draw attention to certain locations in the text that merit closer inspection. Collation, i.e., this act of comparing two or more versions of a text and mapping the variation between them, is a trusted methodology in textual scholarship. It's used to track the transmission of manuscripts, to study the development of a literary work, or to construct a critical text. In recent years, and for a large part owing to the application of computational methods, collation has evolved from auxiliary task to an active field of research. This paper addresses three critical obstacles confronting researchers in this field: the lack of a shared vocabulary to describe textual variation, the limited interoperability of collation tools and results, and the lack of informative visualizations of the collation output. Each of those will be briefly discussed below, followed by our proposed means of addressing them through international collaboration in the context of a scientific Lorentz workshop and a working group.
This intervention aims to present the objectives and the conceptual architecture of eDITem (Digit... more This intervention aims to present the objectives and the conceptual architecture of eDITem (Digital Infrastructure for Edition Templates), an ongoing project designed by researchers of the Innovating Digital Edition group of the Huygens Institute, in collaboration with the Digital Infrastructure Department (both divisions of the Humanities Cluster, Royal Netherlands Academy of Arts and Sciences, Amsterdam). The main goal of the project, currently in its first stages of development, is to build a generally usable infrastructure for publishing XML/TEI based digital editions with a reduced effort for developers and a robust support for editors, through a ‘templates-based’ approach. The core of eDITem is in fact the implementation of templates suitable for groups of similar
materials and edition typologies that can be combined as building blocks to create a modulable and controlled digital edition of diverse sources.

Il workshop si propone di affrontare, attraverso il caso di studio dell’Infinito di Giacomo Leopa... more Il workshop si propone di affrontare, attraverso il caso di studio dell’Infinito di Giacomo Leopardi, il nodo centrale della marcatura dell’apparato nella costruzione di edizioni genetiche digitali, con l’obiettivo di stimolare la discussione e la condivisione di esperienze per stabilire un modello condiviso per la codifica di situazioni testuali simili. “Codificare (al)l’Infinito” rappresenta dunque sia un momento di riflessione teorica sui problemi testuali legati alla codifica di testi a tradizione pluritestimoniale (manoscritta e a stampa), sia un banco di prova pratico per la risoluzione delle criticità che tale pratica comporta. Verrà proposto infatti un modello di marcatura XML/TEI della poesia, con particolare attenzione alle problematiche riscontrate in fase di modellizzazione e alla descrizione delle diverse soluzioni alternative finora trovate, a cui seguirà un laboratorio di marcatura XML/TEI degli Idilli leopardiani che con l’Infinito fanno sistema all’interno del “quaderno napoletano” e, in fine, un esercizio di visualizzazione con Edition Visualization Technology. A questo lavoro, individuale o di gruppo ma guidato dalle proponenti, e dunque affrontabile a partire da livelli di partenza diversi, seguirà la messa in comune dei risultati, la condivisione di esperienze di codifica simili, di soluzioni emerse in corso d’opera o di eventuali problemi ulteriori, per la costruzione collettiva di soluzioni applicabili a più situazioni testuali che costituisce, come anticipato, lo scopo principale, e più ambizioso, della presente proposta.
