One important aspect of cultural identity is shared histories or common memories. Such histories can be presented by heritage. Heritage are those traces of the past a society chooses to preserve. Heritage is therefore also a way of defining oneself. To this day, the European Union has not yet compiled its own list of heritage. This article analyses the World Heritage Sites of EU member states, sites that are considered to be of universal value. When taken together, what image of European history do these sites represent?

Old regions have picked up momentum while novel forms of municipal co‐operation and multi‐level governance have generated new regions. This paper examines the extent to which some new regions in the Netherlands have become familiar to the population, based on evidence from an analysis of newspaper articles. The study focused on the reports about several old and new regions within the borders of the traditional region of Noord‐Brabant, a Dutch province with a well‐established identity. In the dynamic constellation of Noord‐Brabant, news reports hinted at the institutionalisation of some of the new regions that have become meaningful places outside the administrative context in which they were originally created. The institutionalisation of some new regions did not result in a de‐institutionalisation of older regions in the same area but in a more complex layering of the identities of these regions with respect to each other.

Assessing the Potential of Resident Participation in Local Heritage Conservation, the Case of Qingdao, China

Researchers highlight the importance of involving residents who encounter heritage every day and value heritage differently from professionals. However, professionals in our study in Qingdao complain about a lack of enthusiasm from the public. This paper explores the advantages and disadvantages that local professionals see when considering resident involvement in heritage conservation. Results indicate that residents recognize the significance of heritage and have some knowledge of heritage, but ignore their responsibility of heritage conservation. Inhabitants who reside in old buildings pursue other priorities than conservation. Attempts are made to involve residents but in practice, professionals still perceive residents’ understanding and willingness from authorized perspectives, and prefer to reduce gaps of knowledge through ‘educating’ the public.

However, there is a lack of conceptual clarity with regard to the concept of 'student excellence'. The purpose of this article is to present a conceptual framework, called FACE (Framework for Analyzing Conceptions of Excellence), which provides a reflective tool for analyzing ideas on who is excellent, what is student excellence, why is student excellence important, and how is excellence taught. The content of FACE is based on literature on giftedness, motivation and excellence in higher education. FACE consists of a horizontal axis with inclusive and exclusive views at the extremes, and vertically distinguishes between possible answers to the 'who'-, 'what'-, 'why'and 'how'questions. FACE as a reflective tool can facilitate constructive debate among teachers that work together to develop educational programs aimed at evoking excellence of students.

The challenges of conserving port heritage: Tales from Macao, Qingdao, Hong Kong and Taipei

In Europe and North America, port heritage has been a major asset in these processes, adding reusable buildings as well as narratives to these new developments. In Asia, similar processes are taking place, but have attracted less attention. This paper looks at heritage conservation in four Asian port cities: Macao, Hong Kong, Qingdao and Taipei. These cities share a colonial past and cultural background, but nowadays operate in different political-administrative systems and economic contexts, offering interesting opportunities for comparison. Conservation of port heritage is challenging as port buildings may lack architectural value, or prove hard to reuse for their size, lay out, or location. The limited access to port areas in the past may mean the public has little knowledge of, or connection with, this heritage. The main challenge for...

In what can be described as processes of symbolic transformation (Dietvorst & Ashworth, 1995), destinations are created and recreated by both tourists and tourism texts. Postcards, brochures, souvenirs, travel magazines, websites, advertisements and guidebooks all play their part in these processes. Tourism texts imbue places with meanings and create sights that tourists should see (Crang, 2004). These meanings attached to destinations can be part of wider circuits of culture and reproduce images or ideas from the literature, movies or news media. Such processes of symbolic transformation, or ‘sacralization’(Crang, 2004; 71), turn ordinary places into destinations to visit and sites into ‘must-see-sights’.

This targeted freedom takes three different shapes in our honors program and comes with specific challenges for both students and teachers. While the attractions and advantages of such freedom are both theoretically and practically significant, our experience has also demonstrated drawbacks that need to be addressed and resolved in creating effective honors education. The challenges and struggles as well as the rewards that we have experienced might be familiar to honors educators around the world, but they are also shaped by the particular contexts of our program within the Faculty of Geosciences, within Utrecht University, and within the Netherlands, contexts that we will now introduce.

Teachers need to have extensive knowledge to design high-quality education that addresses the wickedness and contributes to wicked problem-solving. The components of the knowledge basis for teaching climate change issues can be highlighted with the Pedagogical Content Knowledge (PCK) framework. In the international, interdisciplinary course EduChange, pre-service teachers built their content knowledge and pedagogical content knowledge. They took part in a training week, where they explored issues related to climate change in different regions, acquainted themselves with place-based education and fieldwork, and were trained in educational design. Subsequently, they developed lessons for secondary schools. This paper describes the structure of the course, and explores how it contributed to the development of the PCK of the pre-service teachers. Survey data and interviews show that the participants valued the course. Although the pre-service teachers said the course contributed considerably to the development of their PCK, the lessons developed varied in respect to the wicked characteristics that were addressed and their potential for stimulating progression in wicked problem-solving.

This paper contributes to this literature by discussing how a video documentary assignment can (also) help fostering relational thinkinga main objective of human geography education. Inspired by Doreen Massey's notion of a "global sense of place", the assignment asks students to explore, in a neighbourhood of the Dutch city of Utrecht, how external influences and relations to other places have shaped the neighbourhood's development and identity. Based on the in-depth qualitative analysis of videos, students' logbooks and personal reflections from two cohorts, we argue that a film assignment can stimulate relational thinking, but there are some important caveats. The assignment needs to be embedded into a course where relational thinking explicitly figures as an overarching perspective. Furthermore, offering students supervised autonomy and continuous feedback, and the inclusion of follow-up reflection is key to making students critically engage with their own and others' "essentialist gaze". Finally, to help students exploit the added value of film in conveying a sense of relationality, sensitization to and training on aspects of cinematography is needed.
