A sample of 264 student teachers took part in the study which was conducted mainly by means of questionnaires and interviews on selected responses. The results show that student teachers hold views that differ from what others think of them on matters of deployment. Evidence indicates that both Primary and Secondary student teachers prefer being deployed in urban to rural schools. In the case of rural areas they show preference for mission rather than council schools.Where mission schools are well equipped, have facilities and proper accommodation and are easily accessible, student teachers consider they can perform well.

The paper emanates from formal observations of the University of Zimbabwe Graduate Diploma in Education (Grad. D. E.) student teachers on three months teaching practice attachment. Many student teachers were found to be clearly on the path to becoming effective teachers but a sizeable portion, about 20-25%, were thought to be experiencing problems. In their planning of lessons, a wide range and variety of problems were noted. These include lack of real appreciation of the need to plan lessons, lack of the understanding that in order to be effective teachers they had to deploy different pedagogic approaches to meet the learning needs of the subject, inability to address lesson objectives and to match the maturity and social milieu of the learners in their care. Thus it is hoped that this paper may stimulate more interest in educators and student teachers alike beyond these student teachers passing or failing the teaching practice component to preparing really effective practitioners.
An Experimental Study into the use of computers for teaching of composition writing in English at Prince Edward School in Harare

The findings of the study show that computers were rarely used in the teaching of composition despite the observation that the school appeared to be adequately equipped with computers. Teachers appear to prefer their traditional way of teaching, perhaps because of conservatism on their part. The study goes further to recommend that English teachers should be taught how to use computers at a general level then they should develop skills that enable them to use computers as a teaching tool in their subject area.

The ‘Facebook’ Decade: A Review of Scholarly Literature on Adolescents and Youths’ Use of Social Networking Sites in Zimbabwe in the Period 2006 – 2016
Zimbabwe Journal of Educational Research, Mar 30, 2017
There is a lack of comprehensive records of the chronological emergence of social networks sites ... more There is a lack of comprehensive records of the chronological emergence of social networks sites (SNS) in Zimbabwe, particularly with respect to adolescents and youths in general. Therefore the current literature review aims to assess what is known about the use of social networking sites by adolescents and youths in Zimbabwe and evaluate its influence on the general well-being of this national subset. The review explores what knowledge has been generated by scholarly evaluations of use of SNS in Zimbabwe by adolescents and youths. Most of this literature has focussed on ethical and philosophical considerations through analyses of patterns of use and effects of social media on the specific user cohorts and are generally themed around impacts, influences, perceptions, attitudes and pedagogical potential of social networking sites by students in higher education. The use of SNS by high school students who, as teenagers, are widely acknowledged as the major users of social networking s...
Another way of knowing : rethinking the concept of time in Gabriel Garcia Marquez's One Hundred Years of Solitude

However, the present analysis is a linguistically determined understanding of the concept of time in the novel One Hundred Years of Solitude by Gabriel Garcia Marquez. Examining dictionary entries of the lexical item 'time' yielded many apt nominal and adjectival phrases, thus enabling a linguistic exploration and identification of a variety of actions and events within a time-related framework. Although far from exhaustive, the result is that an alternative knowing of the concept of time in the novel has been established.

A critical overview of Gabriel Garcia Marquez's representation of sexuality in some of his narratives
Latin American Report, 2011
The Colombian Nobel Prize winner Gabriel Garcia Marquez, who has been writing for over sixty year... more The Colombian Nobel Prize winner Gabriel Garcia Marquez, who has been writing for over sixty years, unfailingly brings sexuality to the fore of his narratives to the extent where its literary representation constitutes his oeuvre. However, his readership has not always liked some of his constructions of sexuality, leading to some litigation and outright bans of some of his works and their adaptations in some parts of the world. Thus, reading his narratives requires an appreciation of his social milieu to establish the patterns of sexual representation as they occur in some of the narratives. This article outlines key issues in his representation of sexuality. Garcia Marquez employs female sexuality as his grand metaphor but the gaps and silences in the telling are metonymous, in this way displaying a particular sensitivity to the reality of sexual desire in his own socio-cultural situation and not some misguided forage into soft porn.

There is no room for religion in soccer : marginalisation of the culturally different
Latin American Report, 2012
The announcement in 2009 by the President of the Federation of International Football Association... more The announcement in 2009 by the President of the Federation of International Football Association (FIFA) that 'there is no room for religion in soccer' triggered a great deal of controversy among interested parties. This article, using a phenomenological approach, dissects the motive behind such prohibitions. In doing this, we ask whether this is not an attempt by FIFA to impose Western secularity upon the African and Latin American people whose lives and aspirations largely depend on religious traditions and rituals? In Africa and Latin America, soccer comes with its own demands and expectations on the individual player and the whole team. Because soccer tournaments such as the World Cup are not every day events, the frequent elements of danger, triumph or heroism that they carry may be thought to require religio-magical supplementation over and above player skill. How a particular player and his or her team deal with the pressure to perform has led to numerous scandals, fr...

Fritzl fathered seven children with his own daughter: “I am not a monster,†is his perception of himself!). Creating a niche for himself on the Zimbabwean literary scene, Mujajati won the first prize in the Zimbabwe Book Publishers’ Award, 2008 for Mwana Waamai..

Tool or Toy: A Survey of Parental Attitudes Towards the Use of Cell Phones at Schools in Zimbabwe
Commonwealth Youth and Development, 2017

The current paper sought to fill this information gap by briefly surveying parental attitudes and motivations for accepting or rejecting the use of cell phones at school by adolescents. A descriptive survey research design was used and the researcher accessed her research population through the WhatsApp application of her smartphone. The interactive nature of the WhatsApp messaging platform merged several forms of data gathering and resulted in semi-questionnaires, minor document analysis, and a loosely scripted interview. Feedback and clarifications between the researcher and respondents were almost immediate. The data were subjected to both qualitative and quantitative analyses and showed that the m...
