Jo Tondeur
I am currently working as a Professor at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel and as a guest professor at Ghent University (Belgium). Prior to academia I was a teacher across various levels of schooling. My research interests are in the field of instructional design and educational innovation. Most of my work focuses on ICT integration in teaching and learning processes and how this can be associated with teacher and school characteristics. This encompasses the idea that innovations should be situated within the wider field of school improvement. Although ICT integration depends in large part on the profile of teachers [1], an important conclusion of my studies is that school policies have the potential to promote educational ICT use [2]. The findings of these studies resulted in a model of ICT integration in education [3].
In more recent work, I am especially interested in exploring the interplay between (ICT) innovations and professional development. ICT is an important challenge for (teacher) training institutions. Also in this area I investigate themes at the individual level, e.g. educational beliefs [4], and at school level, e.g. leadership [5, 10]. To present how these themes relate, the SQR-model was developed, focusing on strategies to prepare teachers for ICT integration [6]. As a lecturer of Instructional Design I am committed to finding solutions to real problems by setting up design research. With colleagues at Twente University (The Netherlands), I am investigating how Technological Pedagogical Content Knowledge (TPACK) can be developed in pre- and in-service training [7] e.g. through teacher design teams. As a member of CREATE (Cooperative Research on Architecture & Technology in Education), I am also exploring how ICT restructures the classroom as a spatial setting and the influences this has on pedagogical choices.
Moreover, much of my work is related to the social implications of ICT use. In collaboration with development agencies, I have carried out studies on 1) the potential of ICT in Africa and 2) digital exclusion in Flanders [8]. I was involved in research projects across different countries including China [9], Australia [10], Indonesia and Kenya. As a Visiting Scholar (FWO) I worked at the Edith Cowan University (Perth, Australia), Twente University (the Netherlands) and the University of British Columbia (Canada). I am happy to discuss the possibility of collaborating in a variety of topics related to my mission, that is to contribute to educational practice and research in order to discover how ICT and pedagogical approaches can enhance formal and informal learning.
