This theme encompasses tribal contentions, power differentials between religious authorities and kings, fathers and sons, men and women. The articles assembled here explore Israel's search for political identity and Samuel's critique of monarchy, the book's constructions of power and powerlessness, and the editors' and early audiences' postmonarchic reflections. Historical and social-scientific approaches to the book of Samuel find ancient Near Eastern parallels for the political organization of Israel and describe the social conditions under authoritarian regimes. Redactional approaches examine the diachronic development of Samuel's varying perceptions of monarchy, from that institution's inception through its entrenchment in Israelite and Judahite society, until it underwent a sudden, cataclysmic failure. And literary and theological approaches advocate for contemporary reconsideration and application of the book's more noble principles.

This volume offers a data-driven approach to translation practices in the Iron Age, building on a... more This volume offers a data-driven approach to translation practices in the Iron Age, building on and reinforcing conclusions drawn in Israel and the Assyrians about Deuteronomy and the Akkadian treaty tradition. Translating Empire employs “optimal translation” theory to analyze the Akkadian-Aramaic bilingual inscription from Tell Fekheriyeh, arguing that it exhibits an isomorphic style of translation and only occasional use of dynamic replacement sets. It applies these findings to other proposed instances of Iron Age translation from Akkadian to dialects of Northwest Semitic, including the relationship between Deuteronomy and the Succession Treaty of Esarhaddon and the relationship between the treaty of Aššur-nerari V with Matiʾilu and the Sefire treaties. It argues that the lexical and syntactic changes in these cases diverge so significantly from the model established by Tell Fekheriyeh as to exclude the possibility that they constitute translational relationships.

Ancient Israel's priestly functionaries have always occupied a paramount position in the study of... more Ancient Israel's priestly functionaries have always occupied a paramount position in the study of the Hebrew Bible, both in antiquity and in modern scholarship. Already in Julius Wellhausen's groundbreaking study of Israelite religion, attention was drawn to the central position of Aaronides, Zadokites, and Levites in the formation of the biblical corpus and the historical development of Israelite religious ideology and identity, 1 and countless important studies have followed in Wellhausen's wake. Th e antiquity and authenticity of the textual sources concerned with priests and Levites have time and time again been subjected to detailed scrutiny, the relationship between the various priestly houses serves as a point of departure for reconstructed histories of Israel's monarchic politics, and the distinctions between ranks and gradations of priests in a variety of compositions has fueled intense speculation regarding the various iterations of sacral activity as Israelite communities formed, dissolved, and reformed over time. 2 In recent decades, the study of Priestly language and ideology have further clarifi ed the nuanced distinctions between diff erent schools of Priestly thought; 3 these forays not only have provided important entrees into the understanding of ritual and concepts of holiness in Israelite religion but have contributed to new ways of understanding the growth of the biblical literature more broadly.
