Sandro Nuno Ferreira de Serpa (PhD, FRSA, FRSS, FRGS, FRSPH, FRAI, FISDS, GLO Fellow), is an Associate Professor with tenure in the Department of Sociology at the University of the Azores and a Senior Integrated Researcher at the Interdisciplinary Centre of Social Sciences (CICS.NOVA.UAc). With over 25 years of experience in higher education, in 2025 Dr. Serpa is ranked by ScholarGPS as the 8th scholar worldwide in Sociology (Prior 5-Year category) and 1st in Portugal. His career is distinguished by encompassing over 400 scientific publications published in Brazil, Canada, China, Germany, India, Kazakhstan, the Netherlands, Pakistan, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Spain, Switzerland, Turkey, the United Arab Emirates, the United Kingdom, and the United States of America with a high research impact, as evidenced by a Google Scholar h-index of 29 and a Scopus h-index of 14 (with 79 documents indexed). His international prestige is underscored by his status as a Fellow of five distinguished British Royal Societies: the Royal Society of Arts (FRSA), the Royal Statistical Society (FRSS), the Royal Geographical Society (FRGS), the Royal Society for Public Health (FRSPH), and the Royal Anthropological Institute (FRAI), alongside being a Fellow of the International Society for Development and Sustainability (FISDS) and Fellow of the Global Labor Organization (GLO). Registered Vetted Expert for the European Commission and the United Nations. Dr. Serpa’s research focuses on the sociotechnological co-evolution of Society 5.0, Artificial Intelligence in Education, and Algocratic Governance. An expert in strategic editorial leadership, he currently serves as the Series Editor for Social Sciences Series at IntechOpen, Editor for SAGE Open, and is a member of the Editorial Board for International Studies in Sociology of Education (Taylor & Francis) and Societies (MDPI). His extensive administrative background includes roles as Department Head, Degree Director, and Deputy Director of CICS.UAc, reflecting a profile that harmonizes scientific excellence with high-level academic management.
