It's Time to Build.

About us

Founded in 2009 by Marc Andreessen and Ben Horowitz, Andreessen Horowitz (known as "a16z") is a venture capital firm that backs bold entrepreneurs building the future through technology. We are stage agnostic: We invest in seed to late-stage technology companies, across the consumer, enterprise, bio/healthcare, crypto, fintech and games spaces. a16z is defined by respect for the entrepreneur and the entrepreneurial company building process; we know what it’s like to be in the founder’s shoes. The firm is led by general partners, many of whom are former founders/operators, CEOs, or CTOs of successful technology companies, and who have domain expertise ranging from biology to crypto to distributed systems to security to marketplaces to financial services. We aim to connect entrepreneurs, investors, executives, engineers, academics, industry experts, and others in the technology ecosystem. We have built a network of experts including technical and executive talent; top media and marketing resources; Fortune 500/Global 2000 companies; as well as other technology decision makers, influencers, and key opinion leaders. a16z uses this network as part of our commitment to help our portfolio companies grow their business, so our operating teams provide entrepreneurs with access to expertise and insights across the entire spectrum of company building. https://a16z.com/portfolio/ https://a16z.com/podcasts/ https://a16z.com/videos/ http://a16z.com/subscribe See Disclosures: https://a16z.com/disclosures/

  • Travis Kalanick and Ben Horowitz on the cultural advantage to building in stealth: "There's a humility thing to it, an anti-fame thing. Everybody in your company gets fulfillment from the work they do every day, not because they're gonna get famous." "You start making decisions based on external validation versus internal correctness. I wanted to build without worrying about what The New York Times was saying."

  • "I've known Marc and Ben for a long time, and we got oh-so-close to partnering up at Uber in 2011. I blame Marc, Ben blames himself but let's just say it was on all of us and in 2017 Uber suffered the consequences of not having Marc on the board - iykyk." 7 minutes of Travis Kalanick and Ben Horowitz on how the story went down from both sides: "I have this whole fundraising process that I would do just to perfection, and that means I'd run an auction." "And I would do this thing where I would say, 'We don't know, this is gonna be one of the hottest deals in Silicon Valley this year. We don't know where the price is gonna be, where it's gonna go to, but it's at least blank.'" "And I call this the uncapped anchor, meaning I'm never in a place where I'm negotiating with somebody where I'm here and they're here and we meet in the middle. I'm always saying, 'It's at least this, and it can go up.'" "We got to 375 million pre with a16z." Ben: "I was like, 'F***, I know we should do that deal. We lost the deal.'"

  • Ben Horowitz says the difference between a great idea and a great company is the entrepreneur: "If you look at Tesla, what you would see is big oil, big auto, big government, were never going to let that happen." "They would kill you. But the reality is, Elon Musk, he's hard to kill. He by himself kind of decarbonized the American auto industry, which is unbelievable in retrospect." "If you listen to the politicians now, they're like 'oh, he didn't build Tesla, he just struck a gold mine and is pulling the gold out, all the people built it.'" "Why didn't all those people build another Tesla? Because there's only one non-fungible, very rare person in that equation who could do that. That's why there's only one SpaceX." Introducing FLUX 3. One multi-modal model for Image, Video, Audio and Action-Prediction. Creations are truer to life in every kind of style. FLUX 3 is a checkpoint on our mission to develop real-world visual intelligence: models that perceive, predict, and act across digital and physical environments. Jointly trained in one unified architecture, our model can be extended to predict actions for robotics. See our work with mimic and AUDI AG in the comments. Over the next few weeks and months, we’ll make the following capabilities available, each after an early access phase for ensuring smooth rollout: • Video with native audio generation (now in early access, link in comments) • Action prediction through selected research and commercial partners • Image generation and editing • Fast variants and features for iterating cost efficiently • Open-weight access to a multimodal backbone, for content creation and action prediction

We’ve raised $300M in Series C funding at a $10.3B valuation from Sequoia, Andreessen Horowitz, Jane Street, Argo, and SK Hynix. Our mission is to run the world's inference. This round accelerates production of our inference clusters, and we've opened an 80,000-sqft, 10-MW facility 15 minutes from our office to expedite production and prototyping. We're grateful for the support from our partners, suppliers, and team. We have a lot of work to do as we ramp production. We're hiring across inference, firmware, platform, chip design, and more. We believe in end-to-end ownership that spans beyond most engineering roles. We look for people that are deeply curious to understand the entire inference system, often beyond what's comfortable.
