AI regulation is fragmenting fast, and the gaps keep widening. Clearing the EU AI Act tells a firm nothing about the SEC's view on "AI washing," MiFID II, or the rules taking shape in the UAE. Operate across borders and you're managing several standards that don't align.   AI adoption in financial services is accelerating. Governance isn't keeping pace.   Employees are already using AI to summarise meetings, draft DDQs, and analyse data. Vendors are quietly embedding it into the platforms you already use, from CRM to compliance monitoring to cybersecurity tools. Most firms haven't decided how to govern any of it.   Before you evaluate another AI vendor, ask: - Where is AI already being used across your firm, and what data can it touch? - Who owns AI governance and oversight? - How do you validate AI-generated outputs when they're wrong? - What's your policy for employee use? - How do you assess AI vendor risk?   These aren't advanced questions. Microsoft's July Patch Tuesday addressed a record 627 vulnerabilities, nearly triple its previous largest release. For much of the past year, public discussion of AI-driven security risk ran on projections — numbers like this are the data arriving, and government assessments now show frontier AI meaningfully accelerating both vulnerability discovery and exploitation. The regulatory picture has hardened too. No AI-specific rulebook is coming; existing obligations already apply, and waiting for guidance is no longer defensible. The UK's NCSC published ten questions to work through before deploying AI for vulnerability discovery.
