🪵💲“Have you ever asked yourself, why Amazon, the company, is worth billions of dollars while Amazon, the forest, is worth nothing unless it is destroyed for logging or for agriculture?” This “market failure”, in which resources of immense value are often assigned little or no market price, lies at the heart of the ELD - Economics of Land Degradation Initiative (#ELD's) work: for 15 years now, the initiative hosted by Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ) GmbH and supported by the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), has worked to make the values of land count in decision-making. This case study from the UNDP Insurance & Risk Finance Facility (IRFF) shows how #Ecuador is working to strengthen agricultural resilience by developing a parametric insurance solution for smallholder rice and maize farmers. The initiative, supported through the InsuResilience Solutions Fund (ISF), financed by the Federal Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ) and implemented with private partners from the Insurance Development Forum, highlights how innovative risk finance instruments can strengthen resilience on the ground, bringing together governments, insurers, farmers and development partners to design financial protection that responds to local needs. For adaptation practitioners, the case offers useful insights into: 🌾 integrating Climate Risk Finance into adaptation strategies, 📄 developing a regulatory framework to guide design and commercialization of insurance products, 🤝 building partnerships across sectors, and 📈 creating financial solutions that support long-term resilience, not just post-disaster recovery. How can countries ensure that their climate information actually holds up when used for planning investment, and risk management?    🌍 The #Philippines, having faced over 500 extreme weather events since 1990, highlight the urgent need for climate information that is accurate, accessible and reliable to guide effective decision-making and build resilience.    🔍 Quality Assurance (QA) is a key lever in the Philippines’ ongoing efforts to strengthen Climate Information Services (CIS). 🌍📊 On #WorldPopulationDay: The power of data in supporting local communities coping with climate change.   Highly vulnerable to climate change, the #Philippines is already seeing many people forced to leave their homes due to rising sea levels, typhoons, floods, and prolonged droughts, while others remain exposed to growing risks. Local governments are under increasing pressure to plan for safe housing, services, livelihoods and protection.     This is where reliable local data becomes essential.    Through their Registry of Barangay Inhabitants and Migrants (RBIM), local authorities in the Philippines have established a system that records who lives in a barangay (the smallest administrative unit in the country), including migration patterns. 🌍 Human mobility in the context of climate change is not gender-neutral.    Who can move safely? Who remains exposed to climate risks? Whose livelihoods are disrupted? And who has a say in decisions on adaptation, relocation and recovery?    Our new publication “Advancing Gender-Transformative Action in Human Mobility in the Context of Climate Change” explores these questions through experiences from #Fiji, the #Philippines, the ECOWAS Commission and the African Union. One message stands out:   ➡️ Gender-transformative action requires long-term engagement with the systems that produce unequal mobility opportunities and risks.    Our findings show that:  ✅ Participation matters when it leads to real influence over decisions.  ✅ Mobility data matters when it informs planning, budgeting and resource allocation.  ✅ Policy commitments matter when they are backed by implementation, accountability and long-term support.    Across the case studies, the strongest transformative potential emerged where climate mobility governance addressed the structural inequalities that shape people's mobility options. In Fiji, for example, this meant moving beyond women's participation in relocation consultations to strengthening their influence over decisions on land, livelihoods and settlement design.    Because the real question is not whether gender is included.
