One thing I’ve noticed from teaching AI is that every audience has different concerns. Today I had the chance to train the team at Ravenwood Health, and I expected our ethics discussion to focus on protecting PHI. It definitely did. But another question came up that I thought was really interesting: “Are people who aren’t tech savvy always going to be at a disadvantage?” I actually think the opposite is true. When people think about AI, they often picture it replacing skills. I think its biggest strength is helping people build them. AI can explain a spreadsheet formula in plain English. It can walk someone through a task step by step. It can answer the question someone is too embarrassed to ask a coworker. It can give feedback while someone is learning something new. To me, that’s where AI is at its best. Not doing the work for us, but helping more people gain the confidence to do it themselves. AI OWL was proud to partner with Excelsior Community College and Hocking College for the International Artificial Intelligence Conference and Professional Development Certification Workshop 2026, held May 20–21, 2026, at Excelsior Community College in Kingston, Jamaica. Under the official theme, “Artificial Intelligence: Breaking New Frontiers – Demystifying AI Technologies to Enhance Productivity,” the conference brought together educators, administrators, policymakers, workforce leaders, industry partners, and international contributors for two days of meaningful conversation, practical learning, and cross-sector collaboration. The International Artificial Intelligence Conference and Professional Development Certification Workshop 2026 was a major milestone for applied AI education and workforce development in Jamaica. Throughout the conference, participants explored how artificial intelligence can support institutional readiness, responsible policy development, workforce transformation, productivity, business innovation, and hands-on implementation across education, business, and industry. A major highlight of the event was its focus on equipping people with the tools, confidence, and practical understanding needed to use AI purposefully and responsibly. The professional development certification workshop created space for participants to move beyond theory and engage directly with real-world applications of AI. In addition to the principal partners, we are grateful to the many organizations represented through leadership remarks, presentations, program participation, and collaboration, including the Ministry of Education, Skills, Youth & Information, Jamaica Teachers Association Ltd’ , Jamaica Tertiary Education Commission, The Council of Community Colleges of Jamaica, HEART/NSTA Trust, Tourism Enhancement Fund, Jamaica Employers' Federation, Television Jamaica Limited, and Accrediting Services for International Schools, Colleges & Universities. Ridgewood High School’s AI for Youth class earned national recognition as finalists in the prestigious Mott Million Dollar Challenge, with students Autumn Joyce, Sophia Bluck, and Bridget Kobel representing Ridgewood in Flint, Michigan, during the competition’s semifinals and finals on June 15–16. Competing against innovative student entrepreneurs from across the country, the Ridgewood team advanced to the final round with their project, Reading Reimagined, an AI-powered literacy platform designed to transform the reading experience for students. As finalists, the team secured $15,250 in scholarship awards, recognizing both the quality of their innovation and their entrepreneurial vision. Reimagining Literacy Through Artificial Intelligence Reading Reimagined was developed to address one of education’s most persistent challenges: engaging students in reading while supporting individual learning needs. The platform leverages artificial intelligence to create personalized reading experiences, helping students improve comprehension, increase engagement, and build confidence as readers. By tailoring content and support to each learner, Reading Reimagined aims to make literacy instruction more accessible, meaningful, and effective for students of all ability levels. The project emerged from Ridgewood High School’s AI for Youth program, where students explore the practical applications of artificial intelligence to solve authentic problems within education and their communities. “Being a finalist in the MOTT challenge was something we didn’t expect, but it reminds us that innovation and success can come from anywhere, even our small rural Ohio school,” said Autumn Joyce. Fellow team member Bridget Kobel reflected on the experience and the opportunity to collaborate with students from around the nation. “I am incredibly grateful for the opportunity to participate in this competition and to learn alongside so many talented, innovative, and inspiring young minds,” said Kobel. The achievement highlights the growing impact of Ridgewood High School’s AI for Youth program and demonstrates how students in rural communities can compete and succeed on a national stage. Through months of research, development, presentations, and competition, Joyce, Bluck, and Kobel showcased not only their technological skills but also their commitment to improving educational outcomes for future learners. I'm so proud of the work that Lester McCurdy and the girls have done this year. They deserve all the honors and recognition they have received. A photo from an AI OWL training I led back in May with educators from districts across the Western Buckeye ESC region. This was a fantastic group of experienced educators who showed up ready to learn, ask questions, and dig into what AI can actually do in the classroom. One of the things I enjoy most about this work is watching experienced educators connect AI to the strong instructional practices they already use. The tools will keep changing. Educators' willingness to learn, adapt, and try new tools and strategies is what makes the difference. Thank you to Missy Mcclurg, Tricia Taylor, and the Western Buckeye Educational Service Center for bringing together such an engaged group of educators for a great day of learning and conversation.
