💵 The administration's announcement of 50% tariffs on certain imports from Canada is making headlines, but keep an eye on what comes next. Trump's section 301 tariffs will be a key part of his tariff wall and may last beyond his presidency. Why? Atlantic Council vice president and chair of international economics Josh Lipsky argues in the The New York Times today that the bond market has shifted from fearing tariffs to depending on them as a source of revenue in an era of high debt. In his latest guest essay, Lipsky argues that the world's largest economy is set to be more protectionist for the foreseeable future. The real question isn't whether the United States will use tariffs, but where it uses them—and how it can align tariff policy with allies to counter economies that engage in unfair trade practices. If we are going to live with tariffs, Lipsky argues we can lower them on allies while raising them on China. And use the revenue to ensure the technologies of the future are built at home. 🚨 The White House just announced an additional 50% tariff on certain Canadian imports—this time under a new authority. The administration has invoked Section 338 of the Tariff Act of 1930, which allows the president to impose tariffs of up to 50% on imports from countries found to discriminate against US commerce. This is the first time Section 338 has been used to impose tariffs since the law was signed. The new tariffs are set to take effect in 30 days.
