Our CTO Stephen Berard attended the Margo plugfest in Germany this week. There were close to 40 attendees and it was very productive. Thanks to Schneider Electric for hosting everyone! Atym is a big believer in open standards, starting with the #Ocre project hosted in The Linux Foundation's LF Edge organization that’s the heart of our device runtime. Ocre leverages The Zephyr Project and #WebAssembly as the core virtualization technology. The Margo initiative is key to fostering interoperability between edge orchestration solutions and getting us to the ideal end state of an “orchestrator of orchestrators” model that unifies inherently different management and orchestration engines that are optimized for edge nodes spanning edge server clusters to field devices. We've been working on plugging into the Margo framework and are now able to deploy #Docker-like containers to resource-constrained Linux hardware and even microcontrollers through our orchestration hub using the Margo APIs! Stay tuned for more as we continue to collaborate with the Margo community. When tightly-coupled embeded code shares the same development lifecycle, every change becomes high-risk by definition and independent evolution of functions is challenging. Teams are forced to synchronize changes that do not necessarily have functional dependency on each other. Over time, this slows learning, increases fear and inhibits innovation. Containerization is often discussed in terms of development flexibility, but a key benefit is failure containment. A well-isolated container can crash, restart, or be replaced without destabilizing the rest of the system. The safest device software is not the one with the fewest bugs. It is the one where bugs are allowed to do the least damage. Isolation limits consequences, not creativity. Without it, every defect inherits more authority than it should.
