That is the promise of Long Duration Energy Storage (LDES), and the challenge AVANGUARD is built to address. The project aims to create a free, open-source platform to give all LDES stakeholders the tools to evaluate, plan, design and accelerate LDES deployment across Europe. As more of Europe's electricity comes from renewable sources, the challenge is making sure it's there when people actually need it. When the ☀️ sun is setting, the 🍃 wind dropping, or rivers running low, the electricity that keeps your 💡 lights and your fridge on has to come from somewhere. Long Duration Energy Storage (LDES) is what makes it possible to capture ⚡#RenewableEnergy when it's abundant and deliver it back after 8+ hours, or even days later, exactly when it's needed in your daily life. By storing 🪫 energy for days or weeks, LDES allows electricity grids built on renewable energy to stay reliable even when the weather doesn't cooperate for an extended stretch. 🚀 AVANGUARD Project Kick-off at the Technical University of Denmark (DTU) ! We are excited to to announce the official launch of the AVANGUARD project: 🔋Advanced Data-Driven Strategies for Optimized Long Duration Energy Storage Deployment in Multi-Energy Networks 🪫 This a Horizon Europe-funded project conceived to develop and demonstrate the first fully free, open-source integrated models and data spaces to enable all relevant stakeholders to assess and optimize the role of Long Duration Energy Storage (LDES). The 4-year project joins from 10th June 2026 the efforts of 30 partners across the Europe and the full spectrum of LDES actors. AVANGUARD fucuses on advancing computational methods, their transparency and applicability in real-environment to planning, integration, operation and technologies design for LDES. Benefits of the AVANGUARD approach will be demonstrated in real-life conditions in four European regions where different kinds of LDES are necessary and being deployed. Ultimately AVANGUARD will help in meeting EU renewable energy targets across different energy vectors, chiefly electricity and heat, by propelling forward the understanding and quantification of value, role and benefits of different kinds of LDES.
