Among the many activities that made June such a busy and rewarding month, one highlight was participating in the Kick-off Meeting of the AVANGUARD Project at the DTU - Technical University of Denmark. I am pleased to be part of this Horizon Europe initiative, which brings together 30 partners from across Europe to develop advanced, open-source models and data-driven strategies for optimizing the deployment of LDES in multi-energy networks. In the project, I am the Administrative and Financial Coordinator (STAM S.r.l.), supporting the overall management of the consortium and ensuring the effective administrative and financial implementation of this four-year collaboration. The kick-off meeting was a great opportunity to meet all project partners, align on our shared objectives, and officially launch a collaboration that aims to advance the understanding, planning, and deployment of LDES technologies, contributing to Europe's clean energy transition. I look forward to working with such an outstanding consortium and to the exciting journey ahead. Project Spotlight | Day 9 of 90 Can Conventional Fuels Help Drive the Clean Energy Transition? As the world continues its transition towards cleaner and more sustainable energy sources, one question engineers continue to explore is: Can conventional fuels be used as feedstocks for hydrogen production? Recently, a client approached WISEsims Limited with an interesting challenge. The objective was to investigate whether kerosene and diesel could be used to produce hydrogen and to evaluate how both fuels would perform individually and when blended together. This wasn't just about running a simulation. It was about answering an engineering question that could contribute to future energy solutions. Using Aspen Plus, we developed a complete process model, simulated the hydrogen production process, optimized the operating conditions, and carefully analyzed the system's performance. The outcome was encouraging. * We successfully produced hydrogen from the proposed process. * We investigated the performance of both kerosene and diesel as feedstocks. * We evaluated the effect of blending the two fuels. One particularly interesting finding was that kerosene produced a higher hydrogen yield than diesel under the conditions investigated. But as engineers, we know that obtaining results is only the beginning. We went further to validate why this occurred, using engineering principles to explain the differences in performance and ensure that our conclusions were technically sound. This is the real value of engineering simulation. Before committing to expensive pilot plants or full-scale industrial facilities, simulation allows engineers to test ideas, compare alternatives, optimize designs, and make informed engineering decisions with confidence. Why Island Grids Are a Different Engineering Problem A standard grid-connected BESS has a utility grid behind it as backup. If renewable generation drops or demand spikes, the utility absorbs the imbalance. Frequency and voltage stay stable because thousands of generators share the load. Island grids, however, have none of that. No Backup, No Room for Error On an island grid, every watt consumed must be generated or discharged locally. There is no utility to fill the gap. When a cloud shadow crosses a solar array, the BESS must respond in milliseconds. When a pump starts, the island grid must match that load instantly. This is why Island Grid BESS is a different engineering discipline. The physics are harder. The control requirements are stricter. Also, the cost of failure is much higher — a blackout means the entire island or facility loses power. The Good News: The Technology Has Matured Fast. Despite those challenges, Island Grid BESS technology has improved a great deal since 2022. Systems now running on remote islands in Australia, the Pacific, and Scandinavia are hitting 99.98% availability. That figure is better than the diesel generators they replaced.

Power from Waves 🌊 Wave power generators convert the constant motion of ocean swells into electricity using mechanical or hydraulic systems connected to generators. Unlike solar or wind, wave energy is highly predictable, producing consistent output day and night. For coastal nations aiming to decarbonize grids, wave energy presents a scalable complement to offshore wind, particularly for island and shoreline communities. It taps into a resource that surrounds much of humanity, offering reliable renewable energy where space and weather may limit other options. The current challenge lies in durability, cost reduction, and large-scale deployment. Engineering solutions must withstand harsh marine environments while remaining economically viable. As technology improves, wave power could become a critical part of global renewable infrastructure. Optimized wave energy systems have the potential to unlock a new layer of clean electricity, reducing reliance on fossil fuels and supporting the transition toward sustainable, resilient energy grids. The ocean’s motion is constant, powerful, and untapped — turning it into electricity could reshape the renewable energy landscape. The future of clean energy doesn’t just come from the sun or wind — it also comes from the waves beneath our feet.

The wrong people have the money and power and are investing in the wrong things and gatekeeping a gorgeous future. Technology is not the problem, we have beautiful minds, doing beautiful things. What we need is legislation and investment to be inspired by creating goodness rather than personal hoarded wealth. Climate crisis is a values and morals issue more than anything else.

As our customer base grows we have the privilege of learning more and more about how customers can lower their electricity costs. The difference between the highest cost electricity plan in NZ today and the optimal plan with automated routines (HWC, EV, AC +++) is now $1,408 p.a on average across our customer base. It's surprising how big that gap is and how much money some customers will be leaving on the table. Basis customers in aggregate are doing a good job of lowering their costs as well, but still work to go! What would you like to learn next? Hydraulics Fundamentals | Part 4 💧 From Energy Equation to Energy Grade Line (EGL) and Hydraulic Grade Line (HGL) In the previous post, we discussed how the Energy Equation explains why water moves through a hydraulic system. However, understanding the equation is only the beginning. Engineers often visualize hydraulic energy using two powerful concepts: 💙 Energy Grade Line (EGL) 💙 Hydraulic Grade Line (HGL) These two lines tell the complete story of the energy available inside a pipeline. 🔹 Energy Grade Line (EGL) The Energy Grade Line represents the total hydraulic energy at any point in the system. It includes: ✔ Elevation Head (z) ✔ Pressure Head (P/γ) ✔ Velocity Head (V²/2g) EGL = z + P/γ + V²/2g Think of it as the complete mechanical energy available to the flowing water at a given point. 🔹 Hydraulic Grade Line (HGL) The Hydraulic Grade Line represents the level to which water would rise in a piezometer connected to the pipeline. In other words, it represents the sum of the elevation head and the pressure head. ✔ Elevation Head ✔ Pressure Head HGL = z + P/γ Notice that velocity head is not included. 💡 So what's the relationship? The only difference between the two is the velocity head. EGL = HGL + Velocity Head When water is flowing, ✔ EGL always lies above HGL. Only in stagnant water (Velocity = 0) do the two lines coincide. 📉 Why do both lines slope downward? As water flows through pipes, friction and local losses continuously consume energy. This causes both the Energy Grade Line and the Hydraulic Grade Line to gradually decrease along the pipeline. This gradual reduction in energy is known as Head Loss—the topic we'll explore next. 🎯 Engineering Insight Every hydraulic model calculates far more than flow rates. It continuously tracks how energy changes throughout the network. Understanding the difference between EGL and HGL helps engineers answer questions like: ✔ Is there sufficient pressure at the customer? ✔ Is a pump adding enough energy? ✔ Where is energy being lost? Hydraulic software computes and displays these lines. Engineering judgment is what turns them into decisions. 📌 Key Takeaway EGL represents the total hydraulic energy. HGL represents the pressure and elevation energy. The difference between them is the velocity head. Both gradually decrease because of head losses.
