Huge thanks to our friends at the Leather Apron Food Truck for stopping by and serving over 80 handcrafted meals for the tenants at Sutphin Senior Residence! Food insecurity is one of the most persistent issues we see among the people we serve, and as these new tenants get accustomed to their homes, the supportive services team has been hard at work to ensure they have access to nutritious food from day one. We’re so delighted to welcome the Leather Apron crew as a part of those efforts. Thank you for your amazing work and for serving up smiles for our seniors. 

As we move through the summer, Team Breaking Ground continues to make progress on preparing for the 2026 TCS New York City Marathon. This week, we are thrilled to introduce our fifth runner for #TeamBreakingGround, Jane Stewart. “Living in New York City, we rarely go a day without encountering homeless and vulnerable members of our community – and it’s hard to know how best to help. When I learned about and started working with Breaking Ground 3 years ago, I gained a better understanding of the tireless and extensive work the organization is doing to address housing challenges and inequity in this city. Through a comprehensive system of street outreach, permanent and temporary housing, and medical and social services, Breaking Ground works around the clock to help our more vulnerable neighbors find shelter, safety, and dignity. Breaking Ground is doing the behind-the-scenes work that we all need to feel safe and comfortable in our beloved city. Now through August 10th, 2026 apply for 172 studios and one-bedroom apartments at 1760 Third Avenue in East Harlem! As we near the completion of this project, applications for the affordable housing lottery are live. Applicants must be households with incomes at or below 60% of the area median income. 1760 Third Avenue is located between East 97th and East 98th street, near multiple subway lines and bus routes. The building includes access to amenities such as a 24-hour attended lobby, onsite property management and social services staff, multi-purpose room, fitness center, computer lab, on-site laundry room, and a wide variety of events and workshops open to all tenants. Information on how to apply, including details on income and asset restrictions and other guidelines are available now on NYC Housing Connect. Happy 250th Independence Day from everyone here at Breaking Ground! 

It’s hot today, and the temperature is set to rise even higher tomorrow and Friday. Our outreach teams have been ensuring that our street homeless clients knew the extreme heat was on its way, all the options for coming inside to cooling spaces, and ways to stay hydrated and protected from the elements. Anyone willing to come indoors will have a place. Extreme heat can be dangerous, to find resources across the city, head to nyc.gov/beattheheat. If you see or know someone experiencing homelessness who need’s help to come indoors to a cooling center, call 311 or use the app to request homeless assistance. Thanks for looking out for vulnerable New Yorkers.

Team Breaking Ground training for the 2026 TCS NYC Marathon continues, despite the heat! Like our runners, please make sure you are hydrating and avoiding the hottest parts of the day outdoors.   This week’s runner highlight for #TeamBreakingGround is Skylar Hahn.   "Having spent my entire professional career in affordable housing, I have developed an understanding of both the magnitude of the housing crisis and the critical role strong support systems play in ensuring long-term housing stability. Breaking Ground addresses homelessness with a compassionate, individualized approach, providing services tailored to each client's needs. Through its continuum of programs, Breaking Ground supports over 12,000 New Yorkers annually, and each night, over 6,000 adults and children sleep under a BG roof.   I joined the Friends of Breaking Ground shortly after moving to New York City in 2024 and have had the privilege of witnessing their commitment and impact firsthand. I'm excited to take my involvement a step further and run on behalf of Breaking Ground in the 2026 NYC Marathon. The BG team has never backed away from a challenge, and I look forward to channeling that same tenacity throughout training and across all 26.2 miles. New York is a city of incredible energy, yet many of our neighbors lack the stability of a permanent home. I’m proud to support this charity’s mission to provide supportive housing and essential services to those who need it most. As someone who was born in NYC and spent most of my early (and now current) years here, I am inspired to work with an organization that is deeply rooted in the fabric of this city. I recently had the opportunity to meet someone who has found a home through Breaking Ground, and their incredible energy and happiness left a lasting impression on me. Seeing that genuine joy firsthand gave me a deep respect for this organization’s work. It’s one thing to read about a mission, but it’s another to see that spark of hope it restores to a fellow New Yorker. Food insecurity is a persistent and growing issue for households with very and extremely low incomes. On average, our tenants in supportive housing are surviving on just $11,000 of yearly income, while our low-income tenants average just $26,000 per year. That’s why we’re so grateful to partners like AvalonBay Communities, who showed up in force at The Christopher last week to pack hundreds of bags of groceries for our tenants. You made it possible for everyone who calls The Christopher home to stretch their food budgets and ensure that no one goes without a meal. Thank you!
