The Evanston Ecology Center has officially achieved LEED Gold Certification from the U.S. Green Building Council. This designation follows the major facility renovation that was completed in 2025, which modernized the building and advanced sustainability goals. The extensive upgrades directly support the City’s Climate Action and Resilience Plan (CARP) and its Healthy Building Ordinance. By transforming the facility into a high-performance, eco-friendly hub, the City has solidified the Ecology Center’s role as both an educational resource and a model for sustainable infrastructure. This achievement was made possible through the collaboration of Nurture Architects, who envisioned the sustainable transformation, and general contractor Central Rug and Carpet, who brought it to life. This summer, we're proud to partner with Bloomberg Philanthropies to award $50,000 to Evanston youth for climate resilience projects through the new Youth Climate Action Fund. Young people ages 15–24 can apply for microgrants between $1,000 and $5,000 to bring their sustainability ideas to life, from litter cleanups and community gardens to creative PSA campaigns. The possibilities are as wide as their imagination. And speaking of young talent: this initiative was brought to life with help from our incredible summer interns, who put together the video announcing this program. Love Your Block Evanston was featured on WBBM | CBS Chicago! The segment highlighted the story of Esther Williams, whose backyard had fallen into disrepair after her husband and son passed away suddenly earlier this year. Her daughter, Deanna, applied to Love Your Block Evanston for help, and our community showed up! This cleanup is just one of 21 projects happening across Evanston, powered by a $100,000 grant from the City of Evanston and Bloomberg Philanthropies, local volunteers donating their time, and businesses chipping in dumpsters and junk removal services. The Chicago Metropolitan Agency for Planning just dropped its June 2026 Community Data Snapshot for Evanston, and it's packed with fascinating data. A few highlights that caught our eye: - Evanston is highly educated: nearly 70% of residents 25+ hold a bachelor's degree or higher, well above the regional average. - The city is growing: the population rose 2.5% from 2010 to 2024, outpacing Cook County and approaching the broader regional trend. - Evanston walks and bikes: 13.7% of workers commute on foot or by bike, nearly 4× the regional rate. - 56% of occupied homes are owner-occupied. Evanston’s beaches just got an official seal of approval! The City has earned USLA certification, a nationally recognized standard for beach safety and open-water lifesaving. Our lakefront team across five Lake Michigan beaches serves 175,000+ visitors each summer, and this certification reflects their dedication to keeping every one of them safe.
