As everyone knows, there's no shortage of information. And in fact the volume can be overwhelming. Which is why attending events like ITC Asia in Singapore last week is so helpful, to hear from and exchange ideas with industry experts.    I joined the panel "Cyber & Specialty Lines: Building Profitable Books in New Risk" that addressed specialty risks, portfolio discipline, and the evolving role of claims. What struck me for the cryptocurrency traders? That the coverage gap is real and where it hits in the world of cryptocurrency hardest: not with the exchanges, but with the retail users. While April 2026 was a good month for cryptocurrency valuation gains, it was a very bad month for exchanges and user security. How so? ⚠️ In the first 18 days of April there were USD 606 million in losses to crypto hacks, 3.7 times greater than the rest of Q1. A report published by the FBI on 2025 loss events highlights USD 11.36 billion in crypto fraud, up 22% year on year, across 181,565 complaints. A new asset class like crypto outpaces the insurance cover. Premium follows loss events. Capacity follows premium. The gap between exposure and cover is where retail users get hurt and where the work of an insurer begins. ❓ Did you know that only 11% of crypto holders carry any form of insurance and two-thirds of the rest would buy cover if it were offered to them? This is not a demand problem. It is an insurance product and capacity issue. The Markets in Crypto-Assets Regulation (MiCA) transitional period ends in eight weeks and the European Securities and Markets Authority (ESMA) made the consequences clear: After that date, any firm providing crypto-asset services to EU clients without a MiCA license is in breach of EU law, facing fines up to €5M or 5% of annual turnover, cease-and-desist orders, and EU-wide bans. ⚠️ The supervisory tolerance era is over. Where do insurers fit in this new ecosystem? Right at the center. A MiCA license opens the door, insurance keeps it open. As Europe shifts from fragmented rules to a single supervised standard, authorised CASPs need risk transfer solutions built for crypto realities, not retrofitted from traditional finance.
