CUCS was glad to help kick off Supportive Housing Network of New York’s Safety and Wellbeing series with a workshop on low-barrier supportive housing. Thank you to the more than 250 people who joined the conversation!

Residents at the Hannigan, one of our Supportive Housing sites, recently made a trip to @studiomuseum in Harlem. The visit gave families and individuals the chance to immerse themselves in Black culture, experience works of art tied to their communities, and learn more about Harlem’s rich history through exploring various styles of art. Outside of exploring the galleries, the group engaged in meaningful conversations with one another, reflecting on the stories being told in each work of art. Experiences like these are crucial for residents, not only strengthening familial and communal bonds, but encouraging members of our community to be open to exploring new opportunities. Community at CUCS goes beyond our housing sites. A pair of socks can mean the difference between protecting someone’s feet and risking serious injury. This year, CUCS received 10,000 pairs of socks from Bombas for our street outreach, transitional, and CUCS Connects programs. During Code Blue emergencies, CUCS outreach teams bring socks to New Yorkers living outside, many of whom are wearing wet or inadequate footwear. Some have recently left the hospital without proper shoes, while others may not have had access to a clean, dry pair in days. Offering socks helps protect their health, but it can also be the first step in starting a conversation and building trust. “Offering this kind of support demonstrates that we can be that person who is there to help and make sure they are okay,” said Ashton Daley, Clinical Supervisor for the CUCS Street Outreach Team. CUCS is proud to be a Bombas Giving Partner. Thank you, Bombas, for helping our teams provide practical support while building the relationships that make continued care possible.

The Commission on Government Efficiency (COGE) has released its Proposed Final Report and proposed ballot questions addressing City contracting, building permits, street safety projects, public-space approvals and long-term fiscal planning. Over the past several weeks, CUCS President and CEO @DawnPinnock has served on the Commission, drawing on her experience in both City government and the nonprofit sector to help identify ways government can operate more effectively for New Yorkers. The Commission will hold its final meeting today at 5 p.m. to vote on whether to advance the proposals to the November ballot. Housing isn't one-size-fits-all, and neither is the work. "Our job is to try to build that trust with people, try to build that relationship, try to really listen to them and what they want, what they're looking for, what they need, and try to meet those needs as best as we can," says Lauren Taylor, Deputy Director of the Manhattan Outreach Consortium.
