On June 17, Envision participated in the Wichita Regional Chamber of Commerce’s Federal Issue Forum featuring U.S. Congressman Ron Estes, joining regional business and community leaders for a conversation on federal legislation shaping Wichita’s economy. Representing Envision, Teresa Houston was joined by President and CEO Michael Monteferrante, Senior Vice President Molly Edwards-Workman, and other Envision leaders and board members for conversations around the federal issues that shape employment and opportunity for people who are blind or have low vision. Envision has expanded access and opportunities for people who are blind or have low vision since 1933 through employment, outreach, rehabilitation, education and research. Engaging in these conversations with the leaders who shape federal policy is one way that work continues to move forward. Access to opportunity can change what is possible. For Kimberly Bunch, Envision has become a place to work, contribute, support others and be recognized for the impact she makes every day. Kimberly is part of the sewing team in Dallas, where she brings skill, care and leadership to her work and to the people around her. Born totally blind and later regaining some vision as a child, she grew up as the only person in her family with vision loss. At the Louisiana School for the Visually Impaired, she discovered a passion for mentoring younger students — a commitment to service that continues today through her role at Envision. In addition to her work in the sewing department, Kimberly helps coordinate afternoon transportation for fellow employees, making sure team members safely connect with the right Uber or DART van after their shifts. Her dedication recently earned national Employee of the Year recognition through National Industries for the Blind. Her story is a reminder of why expanding access and opportunity matters: when people who are blind or have low vision are supported and trusted to contribute, they lead, serve and strengthen the communities around them. Access remains one of the biggest challenges in eye care, particularly for individuals living in rural and underserved communities where transportation, cost and provider shortages can delay critical diagnoses. Dr. Jeremy Barton at the Envision Research Institute is helping advance research focused on addressing those barriers through portable diagnostic technology. By bringing screening capabilities closer to patients, researchers aim to improve access to early detection and intervention for vision-threatening conditions. This work reflects the power of innovation to expand healthcare access, strengthen outcomes and create new opportunities to prevent avoidable vision loss.
