My team won the hackathon at Uganda Internet Governance Week 2026 This moment goes back further than one hackathon. I got here through Flourish Hub.I applied, was selected, and was mentored by their team ahead of this. That mentorship shaped how I thought about building this, not just coding it. Grateful to Cynthia Kyofuna and the Flourish Hub for believing in this before it was anything more than an idea. Yesterday, at the Uganda Youth Internet Governance Forum, our team presented MarketFresh an AI powered marketplace connecting Kampala's local market vendors with buyers, built around one core idea: trust shouldn't depend on being there in person. The problem was simple but real: a customer once ordered for a sack of large bananas and received a mixed sack of small and large ones instead. That single story shaped everything we built. What we shipped: An AI quality check that scores produce consistency from a photo before a buyer ever pays for it. A full working marketplace that consists of vendor listings, realtime orders, sales reporting, riders USSD access in English and Luganda, so vendors without smartphones aren't left out Huge thanks to my teammates for the hours of building, testing, and problem solving together Haula Namata Muanaisha, Nakaima Priscilla, Edith Musasizi, Sumayyah Mutyaba, to our mentors, Solomon Opio, Grace Nakiyemba, Diana Aidoo for the sharp, honest feedback that pushed us to make this genuinely investable, not just demoable and to the organizers of Uganda Internet Governance Week, for creating the space for this. This is one of those moments where a real conversation with someone (a market vendor sharing her frustration) turns into something you can actually build and ship. Over the past week, I had the privilege of mentoring Team 3 at Flourish Hub Uganda through the BecauseSheCan Initiative, where we explored how AI can increase sales for market vendors by developing an innovative business solution. As a mentor, I am passionate about supporting my mentees, helping them refine their ideas, build confidence, and develop solutions that solve real-world challenges. Today, Team 3 takes the stage to pitch their startup idea before judges and investors at the Hackathon. I am incredibly proud of their resilience, creativity, teamwork, and growth throughout this journey. Thank you to Flourish Hub Uganda and the Because She Can Initiative for the opportunity to empower the next generation of women innovators. I walked into Flourish Hub wondering if I belonged. 👀 I left knowing that I did. On 22nd June, @Flourish Hub invited me to the BuildHerTech: Digi-Equal Africa Mentorship Program. First session: 29th June. I almost ignored it. I’m glad I didn’t. I walked into that room and felt like an outsider. Cybersecurity. Data Science. Computer Science. information systems. And then me — an Accounting and Finance student. “Am I supposed to be here?” That question led me to a different side of technology — built not just with code, but with empathy and understanding people’s realities. Flourish Hub created a space where different backgrounds came together to build solutions that matter. We didn’t start with coding. We started with listening. We listened to women vendors in Banda, Kazo, Kalerwe, and Nakawa: “My tomatoes got spoiled. That was my rent money. Gone.” “I don’t know if I made profit this week.” “I borrow to pay KCCA. I start my business in debt.” Those words changed how I see innovation. Tech isn’t about building something impressive. It’s about solving something important. Through Solomon Opio's guidance on the Problem Selection Matrix and Five Whys, we looked deeper. For Mama Prossy, the challenge wasn’t lost money. It was being invisible. No way to track profits or build records for opportunities. That insight became Recordease — a WhatsApp + USSD companion in Luganda and English to help women vendors keep simple records and build financial histories. That’s when I realized: My Accounting background wasn’t a disadvantage. It was the missing perspective. Thank you Grace Nakiyemba for teaching us prototyping. Cynthia Kyofuna for clarity in storytelling. Bernice Perpetua Quarshie for pushing us on trust and adoption. Kirabo Arethias for your guidance. The biggest lesson: The power of different minds solving real problems. Recordease is more than a tool. It’s a future where women vendors can understand their businesses and make informed decisions. As we prepare for the BuildHerTech Hackathon on 30th July, I carry more than a prototype. I carry this belief: Innovation belongs to those willing to listen. Last year, in our Annual Impact Report, we proudly celebrated four scholarships awarded to young women from the Nansana Praying Girls Community. We thought we were changing four lives. We were wrong. Because when a community comes together, impact multiplies. Our partners at Mirrors Beauty Salon opened their training space to 11 more women, transforming what began as a scholarship for four into an opportunity for 15 women. This July, we celebrated their graduation. But what we celebrated wasn't simply certificates. We celebrated women who can now earn an income with their hands. Women who have discovered confidence they never knew they had. Women who can now create bridal hairstyles, serve paying clients, understand business profits, save money, and dream bigger than they did a few months ago. We celebrated mothers who can provide. Young women who now have employable skills. Families whose futures have shifted because one woman was given a chance. That is what impact looks like. At The Business Support Network, we have always believed that sustainable change doesn't happen when communities wait for help. It happens when communities become part of the solution. A special thank you to CivSource Africa through the community foundations incubation program for teaching us one of the most valuable lessons in our journey: “that fundraising doesn't always have to come from external donors. Sometimes the greatest resource is the community around us.” That lesson has shaped how we build programmes, partnerships and impact. To Mirrors Beauty Salon, thank you for seeing potential instead of numbers and for opening your doors to even more women than we had planned. To Bellazuri Uganda , thank you for believing in this vision and standing with us to empower women through your support. To Flourish Hub thank you for being a consistent partner. 🇺🇬 UGA - The Green ESOpreneurs : Transforming the Entrepreneurship Ecosystem in Uganda ! Over the past months, together with Enabel in Uganda who finances this program, we have worked intensely to equip these ecosystem leaders with practical tools and knowledge to drive the transition toward a Green and Circular Economy (GCE). There's already a vast amount of experience in the West Nile region, with organizations supporting entrepreneurship for many years. During this intensive train-the-trainers program, we wanted to put the Kampala coaches directly into situations where they themselves became the trainers to run the sessions from A to Z.  The recipe? Less lecturing, and a deeply practical approach using business games, singing, and movement. Participants stepped into the entrepreneurs' shoes, breaking down complex barriers using tools like the problem statement canvas. As they said: "We are now energized to go out and put all that we have learned into practice !".  🙏 Special thanks to: Fred Opio, Laura Taminau and the whole Enabel team for your guidance and support throughout the implementation.
