It's the most urgent AI 'warning shot' yet. Earlier this week, the public learned about a loss-of-control incident in which an OpenAI model in testing autonomously broke out of containment, launching a cyberattack against Hugging Face. In this new video based on his "Control Inversion" essay (linked below), FLI President Anthony Aguirre explains why AI that's aligned to human values isn't enough to keep us safe - and what needs to happen to ensure humanity *actually* remains in charge of AI:

"At the limit of superhuman capability, the question is no longer 'Can the AI system predict what will happen?'. It becomes 'Can the AI system decide what will happen because it's in control?". -David Manheim, Head of Methodology at the Coalition for Consensus Evaluation Practices, on the latest episode of the FLI Podcast. 🔗 Watch now at the link in the comments, or find it on your favourite podcast player!

📻 A new episode of "ProHuman: Governing the Global AI Revolution", our podcast with Foreign Policy and former Irish President/The Elders Foundation member Mary Robinson, is out now! Link below 🔗
For years, AI safety research has focused on accidental dangers and unintended consequences. But what if new models were demonstrating risks that weren’t accidental at all? To learn more, former Irish President and member of The Elders Foundation Mary Robinson speaks with a leading AI-safety researcher, professor Stuart Russell, about which AI risks, misuses, and behaviors are too dangerous not to ban internationally. Almost 2,000 researchers, civil society representatives, industry figures, and more have signed a statement declaring "We Must Act Now" on AI’s transformative effects for the economy. They state: "1. AI may become radically more powerful over the next 10 years. 2. This could drive an unprecedented transformation of our economy, larger than the Industrial Revolution, but unfolding over a vastly shorter time frame. It could bring risks, including large-scale job displacement, as well as opportunities such as major gains in living standards. 3. Economists, policymakers and technology leaders must act now to understand the economics of transformative AI and to build the incentives, guardrails, and institutions needed to steer AI in a direction that complements humans and benefits society." 📝 Sign the statement at the link in the comments ⬇️ 🔗

"Researchers have repeatedly found that people can circumvent [AI model] safety protocols, often by slowly but persistently coaxing models into divulging information they are trained to restrict." "[Dr. Antonia Juelich's] field research found that terrorists were using chatbots to design explosives, fix or upgrade other weapons, and brainstorm ideas on how to attack their enemies." "Not everyone agrees that safeguards are improving. The nonprofit Future of Life Institute graded the major A.I. firms on their safety commitments this week and concluded that they had mostly eroded across the industry since last year. While most earned middling marks, xAI and DeepSeek received failing grades." As reported in The New York Times, new research shows how terrorist groups are using AI to cause harm - a risk experts have long warned about, now a reality. ⬇️ 🔗
