    This is what a warm connector looks like in a thermal image compared to one operating normally. For context, connector temperature can be affected by irradiance, system configuration, current, ambient temperature, humidity, wind speed, shading, connector location, and even how the thermal image is taken. At HelioVolta, we developed our own field process to categorize solar connectors. Curious how the rest of the industry does it. What method do you use?

    There's a window of opportunity to course correct on project quality that every IPP should know. It's the time between energization and expiration of your EPC's warranty: this is your last chance to protect an asset's bottom line from construction defects.   This lesson was hard-earned in my days standing up development and operations at an IPP. I found out that it is never safe to assume that a project progressing through development, construction, commissioning, and PTO is high‑quality.   Mistakes happen, even if multiple parties are watching, like your team, development partners, site hosts, the EOR, the EPC, and others. And it's not uncommon for mistakes to happen when things get busy, for example those ITC or NEM 2.0 deadline scrambles…   But if you make your claims before warranties expire, you can make things right without undue losses. Taking action means protecting your asset's long-term performance and safety instead of inheriting avoidable, costly problems.   Here's what I recommend: use this time to inspect your assets diligently, analyze findings, prepare claims, and ensure corrective actions are borne by the responsible parties. Get the process started at least 3 to 6 months before the end of the warranty.   To my IPP friends - are you taking advantage of the EPC warranty window?     This may be one of the worst things that has happened to our industry. To the point that we decided to write an entire technical white paper about it. Yes, I am talking about rapid shutdown devices and their unintended consequences. RSDs were introduced to improve first responder safety, but based on HelioVolta’s field inspection data, they have become the leading cause of fires and serious thermal events that we see on commercial rooftop solar systems. Today, I’m happy to share that we have published a new course on HeatSpring, one of the leading education platforms in the solar industry and a place where many of our own technicians and engineers have learned over the years. My co-founder, James Nagel, PE, created the course and breaks down how RSDs work, why they are failing, how the NEC requirements have evolved, and what owners, engineers and contractors can do to better manage the risk on both operating assets and new projects. The course takes about one hour, is approved for 1 NABCEP CEU and, most importantly, it is completely FREE. Please check it out and help us keep spreading the word.

    The EU and UK is mandating solar on all suitable buildings, but we still cannot agree on how to count the fires — and the device installed to protect firefighters may itself be starting them. A new paper in Fire Safety Journal (Nik Rus, Axel Mossberg, Vincenzo Puccia, Cecilia W., Aleš Jug and Grunde Jomaas) compares PV fire statistics across the UK, Italy, Slovenia and Sweden. https://lnkd.in/eqvj_455 1️⃣ Reporting scope alone moves the numbers. As the post illustration shows, Italy and the UK only count a fire if the module burns, while Slovenia and Sweden count any part of the system. As a result, the reporting shows a range from 4-11 fires/GW/year to 37/GW/year — a definitional artifact, not a real safety gap. 2️⃣ 8% of Swedish PV fires caused serious loss or building destruction. The only dataset with real consequence data, and it is not a rounding error. 3️⃣ System size changes everything. Small residential systems are 90% of the Swedish fleet but only ~half the fires. Above 1,000 kW: ~1,570 fires per 100,000 systems, against ~10 for domestic. 4️⃣ DC cables/connectors are the top ignition source (~25%). That is, ordinary components present in every installation are prone to failure from installation errors and mechanical or material degradation over time. 5️⃣ The firefighter-safety switch is implicated in ~20% of Swedish ignitions. And a fresh HelioVolta field report on US rapid shutdown devices found RSDs behind 71% of documented rooftop fires/thermal events, despite being only ~3% of all issues found. Different device, different code regime (NEC vs Swedish practice) — but the same uncomfortable pattern: a component mandated for firefighter safety becoming an ignition source, in two countries independently. 💡 The bottom line: No harmonised EU incident dataset exists. We're legislating a 50% capacity increase in two years faster than we're legislating the means to track what it costs in fires.     I meet clients on their worst workdays. When the worst events happens on these sites HelioVolta gets the call. We get to see and fix the most challenging, and sensitive problems that strike the PV and BESS industry. And I keep running into the same tension: I want to help the industry get safer and more reliable, and I have to protect my clients' confidentiality. That's non-negotiable. The best examples, the ones that actually teach you something, are the ones I can't share. Those stories stay locked up. But I can share our mindset and methodology. Walk through the approach HelioVolta always uses when we're staring down a worst-case failure. So I started writing it down. I'm calling it "Climbing the Waterfall." First article's live, and it’s my first for HelioVolta. I’m not a really writer. Not sure how much this helps. But if it saves one team from a mistake we've already seen, it's worth it.
