  • HyCoFlex at #ECOS2026! This week, Nikos Skordoulias and Sotirios Karellas represented the HyCoFlex project at ECOS 2026 – the 39th International Conference on Efficiency, Cost, Optimization, Simulation and Environmental Impact of Energy Systems, where they delivered an oral presentation entitled: "Optimised sizing and operational dispatch of grid connected PEM electrolysers for hydrogen-fired gas turbines using a multi-objective framework: A HyCoFlex case study." The presentation showcased a novel multi-objective optimisation framework that simultaneously determines the optimal sizing and operational dispatch of grid-connected PEM electrolysers supplying hydrogen to an advanced hydrogen-fired gas turbine. Using the HyCoFlex pilot-scale facility as a case study, the research demonstrated how integrated system design and operation can identify cost-effective pathways for renewable hydrogen production. The results highlighted optimal electrolyser capacities for different hydrogen demand scenarios while achieving competitive Levelised Costs of Hydrogen (LCOH) and complying with RFNBO carbon-intensity criteria.     Excited to share that Laboratory of Thermal Processes School of Mechanical Engineering - NTUA represented the HyCoFlex Project at ECOS 2026 – the 39th International Conference on Efficiency, Cost, Optimization, Simulation and Environmental Impact of Energy Systems – where an oral presentation titled "Optimised sizing and operational dispatch of grid-connected PEM electrolysers for hydrogen-fired gas turbines using a multi-objective framework: A HyCoFlex case study." was delivered. Together with Sotirios Karellas at NTUA, we developed a multi-objective optimisation framework that simultaneously determines the optimal sizing and operational dispatch of grid-connected PEM electrolysers supplying hydrogen to an advanced hydrogen-fired gas turbine.   • 🚛 #HyCoFlex takes a major step toward its 2026 demonstration campaign   The HyCoFlex project’s SGT-400 high-H₂ gas turbine has arrived at the ENGIE Energie Services cogeneration plant, bringing the project one step closer to its 2026 testing campaign.   Following successful testing with natural gas at Siemens Energy’s facility in Lincoln, UK, Centrax Gas Turbines has transported the unit to the demonstration site at Smurfit Westrock’s industrial paper production plant in Saillat-sur-Vienne, France.   This marks the transition from development, manufacturing, and component validation to preparation for the upcoming hydrogen-focused testing phase of the integrated power-to-H₂-to-power concept.   Successfully achieving this milestone on schedule reflects the strong collaboration and coordinated efforts of all project partners.   • 🌍⚡ Can existing cogeneration plants become part of a hydrogen-powered future? At HyCoFlex, we believe they can. The project is developing a retrofittable decarbonisation solution that enables industrial combined heat and power (CHP) plants to operate with up to 100% renewable hydrogen, helping industries reduce emissions while maintaining reliable energy production. Building on the achievements of the HYFLEXPOWER project, HyCoFlex is focused on: ✅ Upgrading industrial cogeneration infrastructure for safe and efficient hydrogen operation ✅ Developing advanced low-emission hydrogen combustion technology for gas turbines ✅ Demonstrating flexible operation under different hydrogen and natural gas fuel mixtures ✅ Creating digital tools and pathways that support the replication and scaling of hydrogen retrofits across Europe By validating these solutions at the industrial site in Saillat-sur-Vienne, France, the project aims to accelerate the transition towards a more flexible, resilient and low-carbon energy system.     Established research leaders beware: the ERC Advanced Grant 2026 call has now officially opened. With the deadline approaching on 27 August 2026, preparation time is shorter than many applicants might realise. For many senior researchers, the real challenge is not scientific excellence itself. It is translating years of highly specialised research into a proposal that communicates vision, intellectual leadership, and transformative potential with absolute clarity. Furthermore, the 2026 call introduces several important changes, including a substantial reduction of Part B2. This will force applicants to make sharper strategic choices about positioning, focus, and narrative structure. Over the past years, PNO has supported more than 500 ERC applicants across Europe through proposal development, strategic positioning, and interview preparation across the PE, LS, and SH domains.   • One week ago, the HyCoFlex Spring School on Decarbonisation of Power Plants brought together students, researchers, and industry professionals at the National Technical University of Athens (NTUA) for a full day dedicated to the future of sustainable power generation. The event offered valuable insights into hydrogen-based technologies, advanced gas turbines, Power-to-H₂-to-Power systems, green hydrogen production, and innovative approaches to reducing emissions in the energy sector. The #HyCoFlex consortium would like to thank the Laboratory of Steam Boilers and Thermal Plants (LSBTP), the Laboratory of Thermal Processes (LTP), Stella Giannissi from Motor Oil (Hellas) Corinth Refineries S.A., Grigoris Tsagris from Hellenic Hydrogen, Dr. Agis Digkas from DESFA, members of the HyCoFlex consortium and participants for making the Spring School a success. The engaging discussions and knowledge exchange highlighted the growing momentum behind hydrogen solutions for the decarbonisation of power generation.
