Co-Packaged and Near-Packaged Optics (CPO/NPO) - Highlights from LightCounting’s 2nd virtual conference This year’s LightCounting Virtual Conference attracted more than 1400 live attendees, double the attendance of last year, and close to 3000 people watched the event, indicating the significance and timeliness of this topic! The event added #NPO to the discussion alongside #CPO; given the recent NPO activity, it could not be ignored. The long-standing industry question of when CPO would be commercialized was answered in the fireside chat with Gilad Shainer, NVIDIA’s Senior VP of Networking. He confirmed that CPO is in manufacturing for #scaleout architectures and to expect end-products to hit the market this year. Are these efforts coordinated? 💡 Enabling the enabling technologies—innovation is not enough. Deployment requires reliability, serviceability, and manufacturability. 💡 Conspicuously absent from the conference were fiber attach discussions, given this is one of the biggest problems. 💡Power is the main limiting factor in the #AI factory, particularly for #scaleout. Atlas 950 SuperPoD: Achieves All-Optical Interconnection with Superior Cost and Power Efficiency 🌟 LightCounting reports on highlights from WAIC 2026 🌟 The 2026 World Artificial Intelligence Conference (#WAIC) was held in Shanghai from July 17th to 20th. It centered on intelligent computing infrastructure, general-purpose large models, embodied intelligence and industrial #AI applications, featuring #technology showcases and professional academic exchanges. Huawei’s #Atlas950 #SuperPoD made its first public appearance at WAIC 2026, serving as the conference’s main highlight. The showcased system combined 1,024 Ascend 950 NPUs into a SuperPoD, using UnifiedBus (UB) 2.0 communication protocol and a hybrid mesh/Clos network architecture.
