Lower Cape Fear LifeCare was honored to support the recent fundraiser benefiting the Donayre Cancer Center for Firefighter Cancer Awareness. Firefighters face an increased risk of occupational cancer due to repeated exposure to hazardous materials, making awareness, education, and support more important than ever. Raising awareness, supporting education, and standing with firefighters and their families are important ways we can give back to those who have given so much to our communities. We are grateful to work alongside organizations that share a passion for caring for others!

About us
At Lower Cape Fear LifeCare, we began in 1980 as a hospice dedicated to providing compassionate care to patients and families facing life-limiting illnesses. Over the years, as our communities have grown, so have we—expanding our services to include palliative care, memory care, and grief support. In 2024, we opened the first free-standing Palliative Medicine clinic in southeastern North Carolina, providing expert care for those managing serious illnesses, focusing on symptom relief, quality of life, and patient-centered decision-making. Additionally, our LifeCare Memory Partners division is proud to be the only provider east of Raleigh, north to Virginia, and south to Charleston to be accepted into the prestigious CMS GUIDE program, empowering caregivers and enhancing the lives of individuals with Alzheimer’s and related dementias. Today, we care for over 1,000 patients daily across southeastern North Carolina and northeastern South Carolina. Our services are offered in homes, assisted living facilities, nursing homes, hospitals, and our serene inpatient hospice care centers in Wilmington, Bolivia, and Whiteville. Grief support is central to our mission. We provide free counseling for adults and children, including workshops, individual sessions, and programs like Sunrise Kids, ensuring that families have the tools to navigate loss with compassion and connection. As a nonprofit organization, we rely on our community's generosity and our Foundation's support to ensure we can provide care to everyone, regardless of their ability to pay. Our mission-driven culture began with our very first patient, Sandy Morgan, whose compassion and volunteer spirit helped shape the values that continue to guide us today. In her honor, we recognize teammates who go above and beyond through The Morgan Way. This month, we're proud to recognize Kristin Sterling. ✨ Over a long holiday weekend, one of Kristin's hospice patients began declining quickly. The family had purchased a gently used lift chair to help keep him comfortable and make transfers safer, but they soon realized they had no truck and no way to get it home. Without hesitation, Kristin volunteered her own time. On her day off, she and her husband loaded the chair into their truck, delivered it to the family's home, and helped move it inside. That simple act of kindness brought comfort when it was needed most and lifted a burden from the family's shoulders. Thank you, Kristin, for living The Morgan Way and for showing what compassionate care looks like every day! #Hospice #HospiceCare #LifeCareTeam

After 18 years of service, we are celebrating the retirement of our teammate, Nancy Cooper! 🎉 Nancy has been a steady source of compassion, comfort, and support for countless patients, families, volunteers, and teammates at our Wilmington care center. As a hospice chaplain, she walked alongside people from many different backgrounds and beliefs, always meeting them where they were with kindness, respect, and a listening ear. How do we continue improving care for people living with serious illness? We start by listening, learning, and working together. Congratulations to LifeCare teammate Molly Langford, NP, Community Based Palliative Care Manager, who was recently published as a co-author in the Journal of Professional Nursing. The study, “A Community–Academic Partnership to Improve Palliative Care in Post-Acute and Long-Term Care Settings,” explored how partnerships, education, and team-based communication can strengthen care for people living with serious illness. This continues Molly’s work in advancing palliative and supportive care through research, education, and clinical leadership. We are proud of teammates like Molly who bring their expertise beyond our organization and help shape the future of compassionate, patient-centered care!
