Power of Culture
About us
The Mass Cultural Council is a state agency that promotes excellence, inclusion, education, and diversity in the arts, humanities, and sciences to foster a rich cultural life for all Massachusetts residents and contributes to the vitality of our communities and economy. The Council pursues this mission through a wide range of grants, initiatives, and advocacy for artists, communities, organizations, and schools. We believe in the power of culture. Working through the arts, humanities, and sciences, culture is a dynamic force for enriching communities, growing the economy, increasing accessibility, and fostering individual creativity. Culture is intrinsically valuable and unique in its ability to lift the human spirit. We recognize the essential role that a rich cultural life plays in communities and the lives of individuals. To invest in our cultural life is to invest in our shared future. We partner with artists, communities, organizations, and schools to unleash the power of culture across the Commonwealth. We envision a Commonwealth where: • Culture elevates the quality of life and well-being of all communities • Culture drives growth and opportunity through the creative economy • Culture is inclusive, equitable, and embraces our diversity • Culture empowers a new generation through creative youth development and education

“In this moment where people are struggling to find community, to come together, to be in dialogue, the arts have a galvanizing ability to bring people together across differences.” - Boston University's Harvey Young. Read it: https://lnkd.in/dXEEtvua #PowerOfCulture

Hearty congratulations to our longstanding partners at Mass Humanities for creating "Our Stories, Our Commonwealth," an effort to reflect the insights and impacts of a grantmaking initiative that supported 169 projects during a four-year period. We, at Mass Cultural Council, are honored to have supported this work. #PowerOfCulture
In 2021, we decided to invest in telling a more complete and authentic story of our state. We launched the Expand Massachusetts Stories grantmaking initiative after witnessing the groundbreaking work of local organizations who uplifted the lived experiences of the people they served. As a funder and partner, we sought to follow their lead. Five years later, we're excited to share that we have completed an assessment of EMS and its impact from 2021-2024. On the Blog: Peer-Reviewed Study Finds Arts Prescriptions Improve Mental Well-Being. Patients showed statistically significant improvements in the World Health Organization’s WHO-5 Well-Being Index. Mass Cultural Council sees the cultural sector as one of the largest non-clinical behavioral health workforces in the Commonwealth, and this peer-reviewed publication provides independently validated evidence supporting that perspective. "The best working relationships between artists and businesses have trust, respect, and clarity. A clear brief, realistic timeline, and understanding of boundaries around revision rounds and usage rights all help a project run smoothly." - Artist and business owner, Julia Emiliani. As part of our series on Creative Entrepreneurialism, we spoke with Julia Emiliani a Boston-based illustrator & designer creating vibrant artwork for murals, packaging, advertising, brand design, and more. Mass Cultural Council reposted this
Massachusetts has world-class arts and culture sitting alongside a world-class innovation economy. Most regions would trade a lot for that combination, which has tremendous potential when truly working together. Over the past year, MassChallenge and Mass Cultural Council, the Commonwealth's state arts agency, have been exploring this creative advantage, talking with leaders across the arts, economic development, technology, and the nonprofit sector about how the intersection of creative practice and economic can strengthen the way founders and institutions build. Now we want to hear from more of you. We put together a short survey with three quick questions: 1. Where do you see the biggest potential in connecting the cultural sector with entrepreneurship? 2. How should those connections happen, whether through policy, messaging, convenings, or partnerships? 3. Would you want to be part of this work going forward? It takes just a few minutes, and your input will directly shape where we take this next. 👉 Share your perspective here: https://lnkd.in/eXdzEshA #CreativeEconomy #Innovation #MassChallenge #Massachusetts #PowerOfCulture #mapoli
