  • Nonprofit hospitals in the U.S. collectively spent more than $7.8 billion on management consulting services from 2009 to 2023 with 0 ROI according to this recent JAMA publication.

Speaking to an hospital expert about this - they called this the "clean out your garage spend." Sure you get some initial value but 6 months later your garage is a mess again. The conclusion is all that matters: "Nonprofit hospitals spend considerable amounts of money on management consultants, but this study found no clear evidence of meaningful changes in hospital finances, operations, or quality of care." Does there happen to be an AI-native company that does this proactively? 🤩

  • For years, healthcare finance has been fixated on one lever: revenue. Our co-founder, Venkat Mocherla, sat down with MedCity News to talk about why that playbook was built for a different era. Today, financial sustainability isn’t going to come from chasing more revenue — it’s going to come from controlling costs and eliminating waste. And waste is everywhere: • price variation on the same items • missed rebates • off-contract spend • invoice discrepancies These aren’t small issues. They’re structural. “American healthcare fundamentally has a cost transformation challenge, not a revenue one.” 💡That’s the shift Because in this environment, margin isn’t earned. It’s recovered. Thank you Katie Adams for diving in with us! Check out the full read here ➡️ https://lnkd.in/euDAH_3K

  • Revenue got us here. The next decade is about contribution margin — and leveraging AI to help teams move faster, smarter, and with more impact. When financial opportunities are buried across fragmented contracts, claims data, and operational silos, even the best teams can't act fast enough. Meet @Omar Nagji, Chief Commercial Officer. Omar leads Midstream's commercial organization, building the go-to-market engine that brings Midstream's financial action platform to health systems nationwide. His focus: ensuring every partner engagement is rooted in measurable financial impact and long-term value. He brings nearly two decades of experience scaling healthcare businesses from the ground up. As co-founder and GM of Lyft Healthcare, Omar helped pioneer rideshare in the NEMT space and scaled the business from $100K to over $550M in ARR — a line so successful it was highlighted in Lyft's first two post-IPO earnings calls. He went on to lead commercial teams at Memora Health, Podium, Alto Pharmacy, and Tomorrow Health, consistently driving GTM transformations that accelerated revenue, shortened sales cycles, and expanded into new market segments. Earlier in his career, he held revenue leadership roles at MedeAnalytics, VisiQuate, and Streamline Health, deepening his expertise in healthcare revenue cycle management. "I've spent my career at the intersection of healthcare and technology, building commercial engines that turn complex market opportunities into real, scalable impact. Midstream is tackling one of the biggest unsolved problems in healthcare finance, and I'm excited to help health systems unlock value they didn't know was there." Omar joined us in a fractional capacity over eight months ago, and the impact was immediate. We're thrilled to now have him on board full-time. Welcome, Omar!

  • The best products don’t just reduce friction — they anticipate what teams need before they need it. Meet Anisha M., VP of Product. Anisha shapes the vision and strategy behind Midstream’s platform, ensuring every product decision is grounded in the real operational needs of health system teams. Her work brings together engineering, design, and operations around a simple standard: tools that fit seamlessly into existing workflows, surface the right information at the right moment, and make the next step feel obvious. Easy to implement. Easy to use. Built to solve mission-critical problems. She brings deep experience building technology that drives real-world impact. As a product lead at Cruise, she helped take self-driving cars from prototype to deployment — navigating the complex intersection of safety, scale, and consumer trust. Earlier roles at Lyft and Walmart focused on scaling large consumer and operational platforms. “I’ve seen how autonomy-driven technology can transform an industry. There’s an immense opportunity to bring that kind of innovation to healthcare, and I’m excited to help build more intuitive experiences that drive fast, meaningful financial impact.” Welcome to the team, Anisha!

  • For years, health system finance has been reactive and opaque, constrained by retrospective analysis and fragmented data. The kind of continuous, real-time visibility needed to proactively identify and act on financial opportunities just wasn’t possible with the technology available. Meet Aneesh Kulkarni, VP of Engineering. Aneesh leads Midstream’s engineering organization, building the systems that power our financial action platform—from AI that synthesizes complex healthcare data to agentic systems that continuously identify, optimize, and drive cost-saving opportunities. “I’ve spent my career building software and data systems that organizations depend on at scale. Healthcare’s fragmented systems of record, siloed unstructured data, and limited real-time visibility make it uniquely challenging—and the opportunity to build AI-native infrastructure that helps organizations act with confidence is what made Midstream especially compelling.” He brings extensive experience building large-scale platforms that connect complex data systems, AI-driven applications, and immersive technologies. Prior to Midstream, Aneesh served as CTO at STRIVR and VP of Engineering at AppDynamics, where he helped scale high-performance systems used by global enterprises. We’re excited to have Aneesh on the team and to continue building what’s next together!

  • It’s a big day at Midstream. Our first LinkedIn post — and kicking off with news! Today we announced our partnership with CommonSpirit Health, bringing Midstream’s AI-native financial action platform to one of the nation’s largest nonprofit health systems. CommonSpirit continues to lead the way in responsible, cutting-edge AI adoption. And as our anchor partner, they’re already validating the real and immediate impact AI can have on strengthening health system financial sustainability. Huge thank you to Andreessen Horowitz and CommonSpirit Ventures for backing us from day one. We’re thrilled to share the news and to finally show the world what we’ve been building. Read the full press release here https://lnkd.in/g-RHgCbP And check out our co-founder and President Venkat Mocherla's post for more 👇

I’m excited to share that Midstream Health is officially out of stealth and partnering with CommonSpirit Health, one of the largest health systems in the country, bringing our AI-native financial action platform to their enterprise operations. Before I get into the “what” & the “how,” I want to start with my personal story of the “why.” My childhood summers in India were spent as an intern — and effectively the entire back office — of my grandfather’s clinic. He was my hero & loved practicing medicine so much that until his very last day he was, in the words of Warren Buffett, “tap dancing to work.” I moved to the Bay Area at 12 and have been a product of these two worlds ever since: one as that summer intern in my grandfather’s clinic & the other as a participant in one of the greatest technology ecosystems in the world, Silicon Valley. From launching new care models at Paladina to building new categories in Applied AI at Qventus, Inc to helping accelerate the best new ideas at a16z Bio + Health, I’ve been fortunate in my career to observe the industry from vastly different vantage points & also “tap dance to work.” Today's healthcare delivery ecosystem looks nothing like my grandfather's clinic — with operators making infinitely nuanced financial decisions every day in a regulated, unpredictable & high pressure environment... All based on siloed transactional + unstructured data, along w/ complex business context not captured in any dataset. We're at a breaking point in decision fatigue & affordability. Enter Midstream Health. Driven by our mission to maximize savings & build a zero-waste healthcare economy, Midstream’s AI-native platform delivers proactive financial intelligence to help health systems drive improved, long-term financial sustainability. When my co-founder, Sumit Kadakia, and I set out to build Midstream, we knew it would take a special village to turn the idea into reality. Along with our incredible founding team, we’re fortunate to launch in partnership with CommonSpirit Health, an organization with a long track record of innovating at scale and a clear conviction that real impact doesn’t come from one-off pilots, but from long-term partnership that builds a movement. Alongside the support of a world-class capital partner in a16z, we have the power to build boldly and the opportunity to truly change the status quo.  I’m full of gratitude to every single teammate, partner, investor, advisor, friend who has made today possible, including the extended team at CommonSpirit and a16z! We’re actively building a coalition of leading health systems, supporting over $80B+ in Net Patient Revenue. More to come… Onward & Upward! And if this post wasn’t long enough, you can check out our full press release here: https://lnkd.in/ecnpSKRV
