Co-Packaged and Near-Packaged Optics (CPO/NPO) - Highlights from LightCounting’s 2nd virtual conference This year’s LightCounting Virtual Conference attracted more than 1400 live attendees, double the attendance of last year, and close to 3000 people watched the event, indicating the significance and timeliness of this topic! The event added #NPO to the discussion alongside #CPO; given the recent NPO activity, it could not be ignored. The long-standing industry question of when CPO would be commercialized was answered in the fireside chat with Gilad Shainer, NVIDIA’s Senior VP of Networking. He confirmed that CPO is in manufacturing for #scaleout architectures and to expect end-products to hit the market this year. The event included three sessions and a closing discussion: - Session 1: Open CPX MSA – Coherent Corp., Ciena, Samtec Inc, TeraHop - Session 2: Other Standardization Activities – OIF/RANOVUS Inc., OCP/Lightmatter, IPEC - Session 3: Enabling Technologies – Avicena Tech, ams OSRAM, Lumentum, and Tower Semiconductor - Fireside Chat with Gilad Shainer of NVIDIA Key takeaways: 💡 NPO mechanical specification is described as a target by the Open CPX MSA, the OIF, and the IPEC. Are these efforts coordinated? 💡 Enabling the enabling technologies—innovation is not enough. Deployment requires reliability, serviceability, and manufacturability. 💡 Conspicuously absent from the conference were fiber attach discussions, given this is one of the biggest problems. 💡Power is the main limiting factor in the #AI factory, particularly for #scaleout. OIF recently participated in the China Fiber Connect Forum (CFCF) event, where our virtual presentation was shown across multiple halls during an event that brought together more than 200 exhibitors and 6,000 attendees. The session, “OIF Update on 448 Gbps Common Electrical I/O (CEI), Energy Efficient Interfaces (EEI) and Common Management Interface Specification (CMIS) to Enable Future Infrastructure that Meets AI Timelines,” highlighted the work underway across OIF to support the next generation of AI infrastructure. Practical implementation work is what moves the industry forward. At OIF’s Q2 2026 meeting, more than 175 member company representatives came together to advance the interoperability work needed to support higher bandwidth, improved energy efficiency, reduced integration risk and next-generation deployment. The meeting resulted in 3 new project starts, the release of CMIS 5.4 and approval to publish the EEI HD Connector Framework. These are some of the interoperability challenges OIF members addressed during the Q2 2026 Technical and MA&E Committees Meeting in St Julian’s, Malta. More than 175 member company representatives gathered to launch three new projects, release CMIS 5.4 and approve publication of the EEI High-Density Connector Framework Document.
