Reason Foundation's nonpartisan public policy research promotes choice, competition, and a dynamic market economy as the foundation for human dignity and progress. Reason produces rigorous, peer reviewed research and directly engages the policy process, seeking strategies that emphasize cooperation, flexibility, local knowledge, transparency, accountability and results. Through practical and innovative approaches to complex problems, Reason seeks to change the way people think about issues, and promote policies that allow and encourage individuals and voluntary institutions to flourish. Reason magazine is the monthly print magazine of "free minds and free markets." Founded in 1968, the magazine covers politics, culture, and ideas through a provocative mix of news, analysis, commentary, and reviews. After years of work, the Reason Foundation has finally released the most comprehensive original dataset of state and local government Annual Comprehensive Financial Reports (ACFRs) ever compiled—standardizing thousands of financial statements across nearly every U.S. state, city, county, and school district. The tool: GovFinance.reason.org The GovFinance Dashboard makes it possible to compare the financial condition of nearly all state and local governments against state and national benchmarks. Explore short and long-term debt, public employee unfunded obligations, bonded debt, assets, liquidity, and more. Thanks to Jordan Campbell, Len Gilroy, Geoffrey Lawrence, Thuy Nguyen, Ph.D, Ronald Hayden, Truong Bui, Carter Langhofer, Kelvey Vander Hart, Marc Joffe, and many others! If you’re a journalist or researcher covering public finance, I’d be glad to walk you through the findings—feel free to reach out by DM or email.

On the new Reason Interview, I talk with Richard Farley, author of Drop Dead, about New York City's near-bankruptcy in 1975, current fiscal profligacy (the city has been posting large and growing deficits since 2023), and why electing Zohran Mamdani would accelerate all sorts of troubles.
